A right angle drive gearbox would be the way I'd design something to turn a body, but new a suitable one would cost £200+, maybe look around for a second hand unit, even a worn one would be good enough for a home project,
Something with a 20mm or bigger input shaft, and about 30:1 or so ratio.
chain and sprocket that would be the cheapest mechanical option, last two I sourced the other day for a job were 16mm pitch 13 tooth £11 on 1" taper lock, 36 tooth blank, £22.........

I like the thinking Woz, probably wouldnt need locking in place with a worm either.
Cant think of anything you could canabalise off the top of my head either. Er, how about a powerfeed of an old mill, are thew like that?
Otherwise, I have some technic lego ones, not sure they be quite upto the job!
