Nothing worse than cold tools.

I remember when I was at the green-keeping, the workshop was an old, rotten wooden shed which leaked like a sieve. One Winter I was servicing a ride-on greens mower and packed in for the day as it got dark in what was essentially a cave. Back next morning to carry on and the tools were frozen to the top of the bench. Locked up and went home.

I campaigned for a new shed which was eventually started - just as well as I arrived one morning to find that the roof on the old one had collapsed under the weight of snow. Mowers/tractors/everything under it. It was a bit iffy trying to pick our way through it all to rescue stuff....

And slip into a pair of Mericun quilted canvas overalls, you can lay in a puddle with these on and not get wet or cold.

Infra Red Heater is what you need. We had one set to come on 20mins before we started. The air wasnt much warmer, but all the tools were toasty

When forced to repair frozen vehicles in my youth, laying on compacted snow dealing with dead starters, tools were a huge challenge as at -20 they really hurt through anything thin enough to actually allow you to use them. The catch with heating the tools up is when they cool down again they usually condense water onto their surface, and immediately start trying to rust.

On the north shore of Lake Superior in January was helping a friend try to revive his Z28 Camero, not an especially good snow car but we were 19yr olds with no amount of common sense, and he was cranking while I sprayed nitro boom juice into the 4-barrel Holley carb but getting only blowback fireballs, no starting, when I noticed what appeared to be mercury moving across the intake manifold of the 350 V8, fuel line had split and petrol at -30 was going everywhere. We wisely gave up and went to thaw out.

Respect and sympathey for anyone needing to be out under vehicles in the cold as an adult earning a living.

I’m on holiday for a week in Cornwall (cancelled from September) and its been a bit cool but nice and sunny. Cracking day yesterday, really enjoying it.
We’ve been going to the tourist hotspots we won’t normally go near because of the amount of people and they are empty.

I do have a DEW liner in the loft, its a large hooded overall quilted with some kind of fleece inside. Rated for minus 40 degrees c.

That'll go over a few heads!

One thing I regret not hanging onto from my time in the mob, great bits of kit.

Minus 4.7 where I am. I decided against going in to work today on the 'bike so am having a day off (no doubt will have to go out and cut some more wood).

A nice, constant 11C nowadays in my shop regardless of cold since I installed a heat pump. According to it's own log it required 109 kWh to keep the temp in november. Less than 20 kWh for October, then I had a lot of sunny days that my solar heater could use though.

Been varying around 0 to -10 the last week.

Dennis does your heat pump work at -20C, -30C? I was under the impression they pretty much chill out about -10C and you then needed an alternative heat source.

The quest to keep warm in the workshop is my latest job, Last few years i have run an oil filled rad full time , Great when the leccy meter broke down for a year! But todays prices mean im feeling tight.
Old brazing hearth went today & in exchange a pile of bits of stainless steel flue appeared on my lawn.
I just bashed the extractor fan outlet out of the wall & it will be replaced with the flue. New stove has been made & welded up from an old divers bottle that i found washed up down the creek, It will burn solid fuel & possibly could be made to run on oil.

Slightly on topic , when all the talk of electrickery costs sky-rocketing started in earnest, I ordered one of these CLICKY.

It's lain unopened until last night when I thought I'd better make an effort and at least try it. It's unbelievable how cosy it is, although I look like a total prat in it. But what do I care, nobody's admiring me and it saves cranking up the heating.

Correctly specced and installed they will work to whatever outside temp is required

It's lain unopened until last night when I thought I'd better make an effort and at least try it. It's unbelievable how cosy it is, although I look like a total prat in it. But what do I care, nobody's admiring me and it saves cranking up the heating.

Just back from being up the street, snow's beginning to melt a bit, but a local woman has arrived at the local Spar to park and slid into the lamppost out in front. She wasn't going fast but has set off all the airbags in her '13 reg small Renault [Clio ] - that'll probably see it written off given the likely costs of replacing all the interior panels.

Just come back in, hot and with wobbly legs. I used to know that sensation, but for entirely different reasons! All the pallets are now cut up and so I'm not sure how I am going to get some more. My two suppliers have been giving them to closer customers rather than van them up to me.

What we have will last a few days now, it would last me until the spring, but 'indoors thinks that the wood burner should be run flat out all the time. If I back it off, she opens it right up again.
