IR great if you work at a bench all the time it is local heat wood or waste oil is the way for small shops but beware of legislation

Hi, Infra red heaters don't heat the air only solid objects in front of them. Which is why you feel warm when you stand in front of them.

What about a (or two) Webasto water heaters, i have just bought 1 (£70 working) It creates 5kw and will power a smallish radiator?
It may be too small or expensive but should help keep the chill off?

They look interesting but too expensive.
From my limited understanding I am lumbered with electricity for now. I am wary of anything involving combustion it would need a big woodburner anyway. Maybe something for next year.
I am on the brink of ordering a couple of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131695927890?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT and seeing how it goes.

I have looked at capacities etc and it looks like I need a 25l per day machine for the volume of my workshop. These seem to be around £250.00 on fleabay.
So all up I am looking at spending around £350.00.
Makes me cry but I just had a tax rebate.
Somebody slap me and make me spend some money.

Ordered dehumidifier, £280 it says it works down to zero centigrade, so it should do the job and covers the size of my workshop.

Ah just seen that it's 500m3. That's a huge space and heating that would be very difficult.

Get a couple of outdoor infra red heaters and move them to where you are working, they warm you up not the whole workshop allegedly.

Why do you need heat? Just to keep the dehumidifier happy or for your own comfort?
If it's the former, spend the money sealing up the ventilation in your insulated part. The dampest weather will be well above zero anyway.
Sealing up your place will both stop "the fog" blowing in and mean that your dehumidifier isn't trying to dehumidify the Atlantic. I take it you have a good partition between your insulated and non insulated part?
I was chatting to our shed builder this afternoon, box profile/big six foam strips to stuff in the eves and seal it up work out at about £1 a metre. Expanding foam is cheaper but as you're renting may be a bit messy.

The workshop is a single skin corrugated construction, with neighbours on two sides.
my builder erected a timber frame internally, that sits separate to the shared wall. It is stuffed with insulation for both noise and warmth then lined with plasterboard. Before fitting the lining you could have a conversation through the wall. Now it is Sisters of Mercy, The Cult, Miles Davis etc etc. And very rare complaints when volume creep kicks in.
There is an insulated double door going across the end of this space leaving another 6x5m uninsulated for storage etc
This was done at my expense, but I am paying very little in rent.

Cheapest outlay might be a few electric night storage heaters. Not so crazy expensive to run if you're on day/night tarrifs and can be picked up second hand for peanuts as people are always ripping them out to put in central heating. Would be a pretty big compromise as they'll only just take the chill off in a big space but cheap, easy to fit and add no water to the air.

I used to have a unit on a farm, 1500 sq ft cowshed on north west side of a barn with Asbestos roof. Freezing cold in winter ok in summer until the sun came round & hit the roof at lunchtime, then the temperature would soar to 35 degrees plus in minutes.
I had a reasonable size stove & it was all but useless. In the end i acquired an old air receiver & built a proper stove out of it. It stood 7ft tall & was 30" in dia.
I cut two holes in the sides near the top & put two coils of stainless flue liner inside it so as to make a giant heat exchanger. This had a 1/4 hp centrifugal fan shoving air through it. The inlet for the fan was down near the floor & sucked cold air in & it came out the other end proper hot.
With zero insulation that stove actually heated the whole workshop & we often had the bottom half glowing red. Best toast ever!
Didnt get much work done as i was always too busy feeding the thing!
My current workshop is but a large double garage but is well insulated with kingspan board, One oil filled rad keeps it nice & warm.
If your building is that big & you cant use a stove & are stuck with electric Infra red is defintely the way to go.

I think for the time being I will stump up fifty quid for a 3kw fan heater and have it live under the workbench and cope with the cold. And see if I can hire/borrow some infra red stuff to see how it feels.
Then look into proper heating for next winter.
The insulation does the job at keeping heat out in the summer. In the open end you can feel the heat shoot up when the sun comes out.
Not after producing an income, just surviving. I can always chip off home if it gets too cold.
