9 feet sounds about ideal, you can have machinery along both walls with enough space to stand to use them in the middle.

3 pillar drills. Couple of welders plus 2 bottles and a 12 inch bandsaw after yesterday. Just need to save up for a mill but at least I can go for a larger one now....lol

I have an over croft across the middle of my garage .. the lowest part of the two support 6 x 2 joists planed & treated beams on heavy duty joist hangers that were inserted with a disc cutter and then wall plugged in tight.
It is 6 foot 2 or so from the ground (which is 4 inches higher than me ) , across the beams is a sheet of 19 mm marine ply , I have a 1 foot gap above the lathe area .
I store all my long wood , pvc pipe , metal , rods ,tubes & bars on it plus no end of other crap. This over croft has given me the serendipity of having a roof above my lathe, which now supports the fantastic LED flood lighting over the lathe and provides a place to insert a folded step ladder and a pair of mini steps.
Plus the 6 inch wide joist beams also give me some where to put in hooks & screws to site several other things such as goggles , work & reading glasses & a dust pan & hand brush .

I've also fitted a transom almost directly above the lathes centre line again using very strong joist hangers .. It can take the weight of the lathe (200 plus Kg ) plus my slight 17 stone frame & a 2 tonne chain hoist all at once .

On this transom I've have hung my dividers , both pair of calipers .. a swarf rake and a 12 " steel ruler , it makes them so handy to get hold of and keeps them off the lathe or from under it.

nice to see the progress you've made, its coming along! It looks like a relatively steep pitch for a flat roof to me. If you needed/wanted a bit more head room at the lower end I reckon you could add another block on and still get the required fall for the roof to drain off.
for a 9ft flat roof span I would think a 2 or 3 inch fall would be sufficient. When I built my shed (8ft roof span) I built the whole thing level but used a 2x4 wall plate on one end and a 4x4 wall plate on the other. As long as the joists are strong enough to not sag over time (6"deep would do the trick) you should be fine.
I'm not saying to be critical or anything, like I said its more if you wanted to really. Keep up the good work, life without a shed or garage is no life at all!!

Do they make those sheradised nails for a paslode gun. These blocks are well hard and my shoulder is taking a hammering.

Use these on the roof plate (roof plate straps):

Use the lower holes on the truss bracket to attach it to the inside vertical face of the roof plate with the two wings sticking up, the truss or rafter sits on the roof plate inside the wings.
You use 30mm x 3.75mm twist nails for the truss brackets and you use every hole (not one nail in each face as I have seen before!).

Desperate to find out if they make those sheradised nails for a paslode gun. These blocks are well hard and my shoulder is taking a hammering. If not what paslode nails could I use to penetrate block and fix those wall plate fixings???

OK I found the problem....lol I was mistaken in my belief that a paslode gun was Pat. I have now researched and found that it's a Spit gun I need. Not A pasLODEand I even know the exact part numbers I need.

you can fix them with red plugs and 12g screws. Fix the top to the wall plate with 4 square twist nails, then A 6mm drill fits through the holes to plug and screw to the wall. You need 2 fixings per block.
paslode make a positive placement nail gun where the nail can be fired through a hole but I don't think its worth getting one or even hiring one for that matter, I bet they're not cheap and fixings will be costly too.
a half decent sds type hammer drill will go through dead easy, just use a good drill bit eg Bosch or dewalt are available from screwfix.

p.s. Typically you place a strap every 2 m according to building regs, but i tend to place one every 4 blocks or so. Doesn't hurt to have a few extra!

That's good because the nails I have are ****e and keep coming out a bit when I hit the next one in.....

I have the roof boards here now but they ate only 19mm. I have plenty of 6 x 2 joists so they will be placed every foot unless someone says they need to be closer.
I also have nine 10 x 2 scaffold sized boards so as I have a lot of 6 inch joists left over I proably have enough to cover the 19mm slotted chipboard with them. I think I will also have enough chipboard to go over twice if needed as well.

Any suggestions.

Fixing the tie straps to the block work .

A decent meaty SDS drill with decent 6 mm bit and use 6 mm knock through the hole red wall plugs and a meaty powered screwdriver to put sheradized screws in.

For my feed shed roof 12 x 25 foot ( ish ) I used my 110 volt TEC screw gun to put 40 mm x 6 mm with 8 mm hex headed TEC screws into my brick work ( When it was two weeks old and dry enough to not loosen ) & used brown 7 mm knock through the hole plugs . It stood a up to 90 mph & blow for a couple of hours one night ..the rest of the house didn't .

The over croft pictures are delayed , I've been out since 08.30 hrs got back a few minutes ago and it's peeing it down sideways , bouncing up off the drive a good 8 inches ..... I ain't going out the garage tonight .....Sorry .

yeah dont use chipboard osb board 2 or 3 or ply but not chipboard its fine unless you get a leak then you will find the board just rots away

also your fine doing every foot but every 16" is the standared for joist or rafters to be placed for roofs or flooring

dont use a paslode gun unless thin strapping is used like joist hangers paslode gun will go through these no problem just hold the gun firmly just incase it does bounce back

What's osb board.this stuff is 2 foot wide and has tongue and groove for it to slot together so not sure if it is really chipboard.
