My SWB transit - MK5, 1998, R reg - will not take an 8x4 sheet flat, only diagonally, upright.
possibly if I removed the bulkhead between the load space and the cabin, a sheet might just go.
VERY annoying - i have a side rack on the outside, but no good in the torrential rain which seems to wait for me to go to wickes for sheets of plasterboard

The worst bit is, I sold my omega estate - which would JUST take an 8x4 sheet in the boot, to buy the transit

Diagonally and upright is the way I carry 8 by 4 sheets in my Renault Trafic, means I don't have to empty all the crap out of my van when picking the sheets up.

Check out the TEOC site. Estima Eminas and Lucidas can be serious work horses if you get the 2.2 turbo diesel with auto box and 4WD! I've carried well over a tonne in the back of mine with the third row of seat folded out of the way. Even the middle row can be turned backwards for a bit of extra room - or even removed for even more load space. As people carriers they come with more toys than most middle-of-the-road MPVs. Twin level air con, two sun roofs, central locking, electric mirrors, etc, etc. The community is as helpful and friendly as any of the best and parts can be located quite quickly.

I had one of those,4x4 lucidas L reg, one of the best vehicles in snow I have driven, considering they are quite low, i took all the families kids sledging up the mountain, it said road closed, ha landrover discos, etc, stuck and that thing just kept on going all the way to the top car park.
I have had two three seater settees in it at the same time. And when moving w/shop had it loaded to the roof i dont know what actual weight it was,but it was WELL on its bump stops all round and it took it no problem.
Sold it to a mate who lives in a caravan in a forest who needs a 4x4 in the summer, He loves it just had to replace the cyl head but that is after 20 years, body is fine G/B ok NO rot same brake pipes , and the parts are so cheap.
Brother in law bought one, J reg had it for 14yrs no probs but had to put a head on it 4-5 yrs ago . he sold to one of the mech's at wife's garage and still going strong.
What causes the heads to go is the rads block up, from rust flakes off engine block, I put a water filter in the top hose and clean it every month in summer.
I well recommend them.

my step father had an auto estima but was a petrol and non 4x4, it was horrific. ive not driven a 4x4 version, but his petrol was gutless and wallowed about like a beeched whale

also the jap anti freeze is a powder based causes the rad to silt up people dont flush them only reason i sold mine was insurance got very dear due to being a import

not wide enough or long enough is a Zafira
i have a 806 peugeot still not wide enough mine is 46 inch between wheel arches
8x4 sheet will fit in mine over one wheel arch with about 16 inch over hanging out the rear door
will go fully in on a angle with front passenger seat out and shut the door but vision is a bit restricted not a good idea

By the way: All pre 2000 diesel Estimas (Emina or Lucida) will run happily on 90% veg oil (under £1/litre if you shop around) by adding 10% unleaded to it without any kind of conversion required. They'll even pass the MOT emissions test without any comment other than "That exhaust smell makes me want a bag of chips" from the examiner!

That really, really surprises me; as I know for a fact that ever Ford Transit we have had, have all taken 8 x 4 sheets flat between the rear arches and behind the rear seats. They have all been SWB vans, too. I did hear a tale that the original MK1 Transit was actually designed around an 8 x 4 sheet. We have run every MK(?) of Transit, since the 60s and all have taken an 8 x4 flat on the floor in the load bed. I myself, personally run a LWB Transit Connect, and if you use the clever passenger seat's ability to fold flat; it will take 8 x 4 sheets diagonally, on their sides.

I have always thought that all other manufacturers were missing a huge bite at the market by missing this.
Stand outside a local builders/timber merchants and watch the cowboys try and fit 8 x 4s into all sorts of vehicles, it can be good for a

after measuring a few people carriers up, none of them fit the bill. Starting to look like a mwb hi top is in order at the moment
