I wondered about this. A friend, an old time-served electrician, said that I could do it on my property. I have to say that I didn't believe him. He was struggling with the new regs and exams and I thought that he might have got the wrong end of the stick.

a lot of older electricians struggle to keep up with the regs because there not doing it day in and day out and have no one to work with to help them everythings in black and white on current regs . if you buy the on site guide and read up on stuff along with u tube tutorials its not as bad as you think most will struggle with the paperwork exam side and give up .hardest part practically is with alterations with grey arias in otherwords everyone has there own idea on how to interpret stuff without putting your name to it

To be fair, he's now 71, has had some health problems resulting in a triple bypass, before getting knocked down by a bus He's very practical and capable, just a bit slow on the uptake now, and the constant changes were starting to stress him. He's now officially retired but doing small jobs to keep himself active.

It's known as a notifiable job so needs notifying to BC, in reality only likely to be a problem if you come to sell your house, when filling in the paperwork, you are asked "any electrical work been carried out since...". BC have no way of knowing you've changed it and the non existent electrical police will not be coming round knocking.

There is another issue, if you change it and burn your house down at a later date and the insurance ask you for your EIC which you won't be able to provide they may refuse to pay out, but unlikely in reality. I say that because if the fire service can't find the cause of the fire they'll just blame it on the electrics whether it was an electrical fire or not. Most of the regs changes are fire service driven (along with manufacturers), metal consumer units, AFDDs etc.

How many circuits do you need? how much room you got? Will you replace the 2 you have with one bigger one?

that crabtree unit is well past its sell by date get a new 10 way split twin rcd unit fitted there only 80 quid from screwfix . bg are good just adding to that crap is just a waste of money and time

Thats what I'm thinking, have everything in one CU. The shower supply comes all the way up from the main incoming supply, lower down and outside the wall.

no u wont its on your own property and providing its done correctly whats the problem. theres too many professionals wearing jackboots strutting around quoting regulations

I feel fairly confident in basic house wiring stuff, but I like the peace of mind getting it hooked up by a pro, plus getting the paperwork in case anything goes awry, like my shed burns down.....

Most of the shed wiring is already in, temporarily connected to make it work, I'll just leave the final hookup to the sparky.

I already fitted a new 3 way CU in the shed, so loads of new bits in there now, I could have bought a small house with whats its cost so far.

Oh I know that feeling too well the cost of mine was double what I expected

I daren’t even calculate, but at least twice what a basic wood 12’ x 16’ shed would have been to buy. But then again, it is a lot more than just a basic wooden shed, so it’s all relative.

Plus the concrete base, which was £1200.

Information time, where I ripped out the wheelchair ramp to the sliding doors, I’ve discovered a 2” gap under the door rail. It looks like the ramp was installed before the door was fitted, and the support for the lower rail was concrete that overlapped onto the row of bricks.

So, what should I use to fill the gap, will a bag of mortar and some squishing into place be tough enough? Or does it needs something stronger? That little block of wood is just there to stop it all sagging.

Belay that, I just tried to fix it with ready mix mortar, mixed it like it said in the bag, came out like damp sand, absolutely no way was it sticking together, or to anything else.

So, as per instructions I added a bit more water, so now it is a bit damper, but no matter how I pushed and shoved and tweaked that s*** into the gap it would not fill the gap to the top without sagging a couple of mm, which totally defeats the purpose of doing the job.

Now I’m stuck. I might have to weaken and seek professional help.

there no easy way to do it

paving flag needed then cut it into 3" strips cement below and above it paving flag size 18-24mm

use a chisel to create the gap above and seat the flag onto the mortor

do one side then when set take that block out as it will expand onto the plastic

I did think about slicing up some spare slabs I have, as they look pretty much the right size. I shall do battle again tomorrow.

if you use the slabs
get a touch of mortar on top of the slab and a thin bed on top of the base bricks . slip them in and get some broken roof slate and tap it in under the slab that will tighten it up and you can face point the joint off

I have about 5mm space if I put some slab slices in, but not sure where to find slate around here though.

A while back I had the idea to change the sliding door over to proper opening outward type patio doors, which is a bit more practical than this one big hefty slider. But that’s a bit spendy so will have to wait until next year.

My bits of roof slate were picked up off the pavement when we had the gales here - still waiting for me to sort the garage window out!

Try Gumtree, Reclamation yards or you could buy some new if stuck

if no room don't bother with mortar on top of the blocks just a bit in between and wedge tight with the bits of slate and point off then just use sealant underneath the sill

Any builders merchants will sell you a few slates to prop up blocks till the morning tar sets.

I smashed about 50 old ones the other day as the holes were too big!
