Old thread resurrection, I'm putting a gate in my back fence and just trying to work out what best to treat the bottom part of the posts that will be below ground with, I really want to get this done next week so although I have some nicely matured used engine oil I don't really have a couple of months to let it soak.
Proper creosote would probably be best (I remember painting our fences with it as a kid wearing just kitchen gloves for ppe ) but that seems to be difficult to obtain. Is bitumen paint any benefit? Although there are conflicting opinions as to if this would actually trap moisture in and there are thoughts that its best to leave the bottom end unsealed and sitting in gravel for drainage
So what would be the opinions of the collective?
