Yeah, did a fence every couple of years with waste car oil when we were in the trade and had gallons of it, it looked good, just about turned it black, was rough sawn timber so soaked in well.
You just have to keep kids off it for a week or so or you will have Mum's playing war.
Fence was still good when we sold about 10 years later, did used to get a bit of green on it at the bottom though, perhaps creosote would have prevented that.

My old man would always have a couple of fenceposts standing in bucket of used engine oil at the back of the shed ready to be used.

best stuff to use is genuine coal tar creosote .add some parafin and a cupfull of waste engine oil and it lasts years and doesnt bleach

When i did ours at the last house, i creosoted all the bits before i started, left the bottom of the posts sitting in a tub of creostote for a month, then gave everything a coat once installed. I used the stuff that's industrial supply only - the proper stuff - you could smell it as you drove round the corner
It lasted the 8 years we were there, (i repainted it once i think) even with the posts buried in soil at the bottom.
My Grandad used to paint all his outside timberwork in old oil - he used to do it like clockwork, once a year when the plants had all died back. His fence lasted 31 years

The industrial use only stuff is the best I have a mate who is agricultural supply type bloke so I get the proper stuff from him

what do u think i just posted
coal tar creosote genuine not substitute. its available in 5 gallon drums 45 quid ishi also leave posts in soak a few weeks prior,thing is these are old waggon wheels in reasonable condition on a chassis i'm converting into a static van ,so they need to look reasonable i accept they'll be discoloured for a short period but i don't want permanent brown wheels,was going to make a tub to spin them ,each in turn every year say. thanks so far for all tips.[as the circumciser says]. :-}

Last May (2013) I creosoted six 6x6 fence panels, within four days I had a visit from the Local enviromental officer informing me that Creosote can no lobger be used where
the general public has access or on residential properties and can only be use by certain industries. She said it had Carcinogenic properties and insisted that I remove said
panels immediately and threatened me with court action if I refused. She left me with a handful of HSE leaflets of the use of Creosote and was advised to use a Creosote
substitute next.

shoulda told her it was the substitute with parafin and oil ive just done all my fences and my daughters round her house . balls to em no one has complained

My sympathies. Your local Environmental Health dept.can't be too busy if they have time to prosecute people over what they've painted their fence panels with. I think I would have told her that I had actually used "Creotreat" -this Creosote substitute looks and smells the same as Creosote but is still available (AFAIK) for Joe Public to buy. Obviously I don't get real Creosote from a local fencing contractor because that would be against the law....

been using old engine with the subsitute , would like to get some proper creosote , where should i look for the pukka stuff and how much are you paying

ah handy...so whats the differance with the real stuff , i remember my dad having it around when i was younger but ive only used the subsitute stuff

about 40 quid for 4 gallons delivered
got some of this , have you notices it doesnt have the original reek to it ? shame as i was looking forward to the stench lol
given the choice is neat creosote or mixed with engine oil the best ?

i use the genuine creosote. 1 gallon add a couple of pints of parafin and 2 cup fulls of waste engine oil and it soaks in a treat and goes on well

its cheap to buy it soaks in to the wood along with the oil and creosote and goes further
