Blades are a bit nicked all over but still chipping well, might turn them around and get some spares, but perhaps better as its not so agressive pulling stuff in.
I thought I was going to have issues with short fat laurel stubs but with a push log they all went through easy.

I'm a bit sore from all the lifting. Unloading chipper from car at 10pm whilst exhausted, is not ideal.
I have an idea for a miniture engine crane? Does anything exist for small engines etc.. ?

What sort of weight do you hope to move?

I have a piece of 12mm thick stockboard that I slip into the boot , a few inches in over the edge so I can roll things onto it and slide heavy stuff out the boot on to a reinforced trolley then into the garage for hoisting up and installing on a bigger, stronger trolley or the welding bench .

I have my fully fitted removable 90 kg 12 volt disabled buggy lifter to also help get things out , which is a boon some days indeed.

I've not yet weighed it but I believe the chipper drum to be 60-80 kg.

I have been forgetting my previous plan, which us to use my ladder as an A frame to lift and support it.
I'll get some M8 lifting eyes.

How about a 12 volt disabled crane? My wife’s stepfather had one fitted to his Saab estate to lift M-i-Laws mobility scooter out of the back. There must be a few about due to “natural causes”

No a van would be a massive expensive pita whilst not earning me any more money and having less space for my kit, whilst also being a bigger target for theft, and nowhere to park it. Nope.

I know somone thats always having household and other rubbish dumped in the back of his tipper, nope to that, too.

Your job seems to be tree surgery/gardening. A van would surely be a business expense and would actually save you money.
It would also save your back!

It's also more professional looking. If a tree surgeon turned up here in a car I'd be thinking what kind of amateur is this!

If you get the right van you can have 3 seats in the front so still usable as a car.

How can a van have less usable space than a car? Even if you have a big car or people carrier a van is always better.

I had a 406 estate and I was using it like a van but it was always a compromise. Now that I have a van I'd never go back to a car. It's so nice being able to load stuff into it without being worried about damaging the trim or seats or spilling a petrol can.

I'm a freelance climber that occasionally does hedge work and small trees by myself. I dont pretend to be a full tree surgery business!

Most of my work there will be a proper arb body tipper van, road tow chipper and three of us but then prices are starting at ~ £600 - 2000 per day. No one will want to pay the expense of two tippers.

When I dont have the proper work, I'm doing these small hedge jobs by myself.

I actively seek out the low-overheads guys like @Kram when I need work doing. The guy I currently use for climbing any scary trees on the farm (I only do the easy ones!) is an ex-EDF climber who arrives in a knackered old Opel saloon. He climbs like a cat, but is incredibly safe. And smart too! Not in a million years would I swap him for one of the full-wrap-pick-up, branded-fleeces teams.

By the way, EDF no longer allow top-handled saws in France, and insist on baskets for virtually everything.

are you trying to state that all businesses should have a van to be professional looking

as a customer looking at the vehicle or is it based on insurance/government insistance that all business owners should have a van

My old man had a TV rental business. They had vans in the late 60s early 70s, he then bought his engineers estate cars, they looked after them better, and the cars depreciated less….though suspect the current tax regime on company cars would kill it!

Perception and customer image for many trades means the expectation is a sign written van.
You can get away with a plain van especially if you are a subbie, but an estate or car makes you look "rough". Irrespective of the standard of your work.

I'm very lucky in so far as I can get away with working out of a car, and the customers I have already know me and aren't that bothered - but it’s certainly something I've encountered where image is king and first impressions count.
Both with customers and other trades.

I'd have no issue buying a van, but the problem is they are magnets for thieves at the moment and it is just a case of when, not if....
