I usually stop reading property listing when I see the phrase "listed building"...which in my mind equals expense, stress and delays.

On the up side...very unlikely that Santa will miss that chimney on his rounds

The problem is, in some parts of the country, listed properties are the only ones worth having.
The woman who bought the chimney has basically just signed up to a very expensive maintenance regime though.

If it ever had to come down there must be 50K worth of hand made bricks which are currently selling for over £1 per brick

they knocked the skinyard chimney down at yarm it all went to aisalby on a farm to level the hillside up outside the house then grassed over

That's what I meant about feeling nostalgic - In my twenties I was a trad steeple jack - I'd work spring, summer & autumn on chimneys & difficult access in the SE.
Swinging around on bosuns chairs, one line, no harnesses. Improbable scaffold round the tops.
Can't imagine I'd do it now but I was braver then.....(Stupider if that's possible, feel pretty stupid most days now)
My boss retired as we were losing jobs to the nascent rope access crews. At the time most of them were climbing bums like me but didn't have any skills beyond the ability to descend a rope & rescue each other
That and they got organised & were able to steer industry standards. H&S never bothered us as they didn't want to climb the ladders but once most of the brick chimneys came down it was done

Simples

Every contractor worth their salt has the digger with a bad handbrake. Park her beside the chimney and oops there was an unfortunate accident.

Or time it with a bad storm and bring a digger in the dark.

Just sayin that's all.

Fred's method of burning telephone poles would be much safer and provide an element of control but where is the fun in that.

Wonder where its 4m diameter, at the base? or the top.
I nearly bought a ex firestation complete with pole to convert to a house. Seemed ideal to me, huge garage underneath, batman style pole down to your transport in the morning, ample parking for 4 large fire engines, a bell to use in a quirky alarm system, big doors that open fast and it was cheaper than the surrounding houses.
Mortgage broker didnt see the potential the same way though...
