Windows 10 and firefox pains

I have been suffering this problem for months but it has become a major pain, I have a laptop that came with windows 10 and i use firefox mainly because i am use to it, I often have a window open and 10 tabs at the same time as i like to be able to have quick access to sites, But every few days i have page loading issues almost as if the internet is slow but if i open task manager my cpu is running flat out, I know it could be a lot of things but firefox is using around 2 gigs of memory and always has about 6 processes open, If i kill off firefox using end task from the bottom of the list it crashes the tabs and reloads them and the problem is gone for few days, Is it just me getting this

edit... firefox displays a not responding at the top when this is going on until i kill off a few of its processes.

Firefox, Opera and Chrome have 99% the same feel between them, so it may be worth trying another browser, although they all seem to take a disproportionate amount of memory.

what addons are you running as well

using windows 7 but i have a few firefox addons on my system

firefox with 4 pages open but has addons in the back ground running on firefox



also note its a fresh boot pc everything is closed down not left for days on end where the pc starts to drag its heels
might have been able to do it with xp but not with windows 7 and 10 as my pc running xp was on 24 hrs a day yearly without shutting down

It could be your AV. If you click the CPU tab in Task Manager, it will order the processes with the top being the one that is hogging CPU. Another cause of massive slowdown is disc IO.

They also have the same memory hole problems. I can't believe they still haven't sorted it out.
The only solutions is to end task every now and then. It will crash but then you can restore tabs or pages.

The newer version of Chrome seems to have addressed this and it doesn't seem to be such an issue any more, for me at least. I still keep Task Manager open for a quick reference though.

The only add ons i use are ad blocker and session manager, Win7 was much better, I have been looking at a local place that does Panasonic tough book refurbs with Win7, This Laptop i have now came with windows 10 and i have been told it will not run well on win7

FYI Opera has a built-in ad blocker, just tick a box on setup.

I'm running Win7 and I get the same issue, sometimes I've 15 tabs open with no issues and then as you say for no particular reason it will run like a dog. I generally do a reboot. My work laptop runs Win7 PRO and never has the issue

Interesting thing is I run adblocker too but only on my own laptop

I had the same problem and got so fed up with it I switched to Chrome.
Unlikely I'll ever go back now, Chrome has been flawless so far and feels almost identical as FF in use.

I'm running Win10 Pro, which is a fresh instal from last week. I currently have 17 tabs open in Chrome and am using a total of 54% memory (8GB installed). Chrome is using 1.7GB.

Also running Adblocker, Ad blocker+ and Adblock for YouTube.

Ditch adblocker, it's not multithreaded at page opening and will hang everything else until it's processed the page, a big slowdown when FF is so multithreaded itself - try uBlock Origin instead.

I will try that next time i get the same problem
@PhillipM i just ditched adblocker for ublock as we have Win10 on the desktop and this never happens.

Something similar used to happen on my laptop. It kept putting the memory warning on the screen and all I had running was Firefox. I saw almost 3gigs of ram in use by Firefox when it had six or so tabs open!

I looked up Firefox problems with ram on Google and it suggested a virtual memory setting was to small, it wasn't, it was
massive. I set it at what they suggested. It ran fine after that. I have had maybe half a dozen windows updates/setup since then, the setting was massive last time I took a look but it's still running fine. There was also a suggested Firefox config change, which I did and it didn't do anything.

I should really put windws7 on it, it's a windows 7 machine that had been downgraded to 10. The updates are a joke, it takes so long to shut down and start up.

When I (finally) got the correct laptop I installed a brand new mSata drive so I could put a 2tb in the normal bay, fresh install of 10 pro, Lenovo drivers and patches including an update manager and I never even notice it update

I have some big programs in use quite often and around 10-15 tabs in chrome, no slowdowns or memory hogging

I don't see the issue either, I've been using W10 for a while now, it updates when it needs to, I reboot it and it's fine.
It's fast, it's stable, It's certainly no worse than any other version I've used.

I’ve run 10 since the insider preview on my desktop, only did a full reinstall when the proper version was released, but that was needed due to me messing things up

The laptop (which has quickly become my main machine) is a Thinkpad 430 so not exactly new, originally a win 7 machine, I use Lightroom, a bit of photoshop, swap to the desktop for heavyweight stuff, video editing and I usually have Rave (LR workshop) ready to go
