Having said that my current setup is a length of outdoor rated cat5e in underground conduit, but I have seen the setup I described working successfully where as passing the signal through a CU caused problems.

Interestin stuff. I'd like to get the internet in my workshop in an ideal world.

I'd ruled out the plug in power cable jobbies as it's probably 50m and two distribution boards apart - not to mention having to tap into the house phase (different to workshop sockets but located in workshop so doable).

Saying I did that, I can do it I think more or less legitimately as there are untapped breaker switch locations on the same, house phase within the shed. What are thoughts on the distance ~50+m, two dbs, oh and a wind turbine inverter potentially doing odd stuff all on the same phase...?

Running a cable is not worth the hassle, there are some spare conduits to get under the two roadways between but it still involves digging concrete and clipping cable to the house. The internet isn't worth that much.

Cheapest solution is outdoor cat5e cable, especially if you don't need to start burying it in conduit, Have you got line of sight ? If so how about a couple of WiFi extenders that have an external aerial connector and then use a pair of directional antennas pointed at each other.

No I can't quote the regs even if I wanted to. I'm sure feeding a run of SWA and a single socket from a single breaker to a cu and a single socket would struggle to get a sign off under Part P.

Here's another option. Get a cheap 4G router with external LTE antenna and get a 30 day rolling data only sim.
I use this setup in my business unit and I pay £28 per month for 32GB data.

Just for information with all this talk of WIUFI to the garage, I was struggling with it, with a only just there signal from the router, so I gave up went to a DIY place and bought a pair of BT AV600's for 330, now fitted and working, one pluged in at the router with a network cable and the other in a socket in the garage network cable to the PC, two CU's one in garage and one in the house so they are on different spurs/rings what ever but it works.

I think that is the problem. they work for some but not others........ bit hit and miss.

Powerline ethernet is inappropriate technology for use on a mains power network. Wideband OFDM is fine when contained in co-ax, but not when let loose over unscreened, unbalanced cabling!

Thanks, I've just looked, it'd be way over 50m and there's another RCD to get through so I've ruled the power line idea out again. Its really not worth the effort with a cable. May actually be almost possible to get a line of sight though (through a couple windows) so perhaps that's worth considering, cheers

Ethernet cable works at up to 100m. I can only get a mobile 3mb/s internet signal here in the boondocks 70m from the house. There's a wifi dongle there in the chicken house with a router, then around 80m of Cat5E to another router in the house. Works a treat.
I blew the cable through a 100m of irrigation hose using a piston (rounded off bolt) and the compressor. I was horribly proud of that....

Is there not some danger in running cat5 between buildings? I can't remember what the potential issue was other than it being something to do with imbalanced earths in the two buildings getting tethered by the ethernet cable.

Or I may be imagining it - not the first time :dontknow:
