Wifi in the shed

ok gadjet people, I live in an old house 3 foot thick walls, and my shed is about 20 yeards from the house. There is a single cable 16 mm sq, from the fuse box, to another fuse box in the shed. With lights sockets etc from that.

What is the best most reliable way to get wifi in the shed, so i can use internet radio out there also stream music from the house over wifi.

I dont do gadjets so need help, please.

The most reliable method is to hard wire it. Run some ethernet cable out there into a WiFi router. I just stuffed mine into a garden hose and run it down the path.

Number of options
Easiest move router to window ledge facing shed problem solved. Also very cheap option!
Next run phone cable to shed from house and use eithernet connection to back of your router to wifi extender unit ( I use apples airport express in my shed works a treat ) but there are other ones out there.

Next you can buy units that plug into you mains sockets ( looks like a normal 3 pin plug ) add a second one in your shed and away you go. Uses the mains circuits as a cable connect to each other.

Cable to the shed isnt a serios option now due to additional pipes and cables between the house and shed.

No windows on the wall either, so it looks like plug in options it is...

I ran an external cat5 to my workshop and it's been working great for years. I even split it into 2 lots of 2 pairs which I read is bad juju but that works perfectly too.

I've tried it via two cu's (house and workshop) with about 10' of cable between them and not a chance. They are designed to work on the same ring.

As long as the distance isn't too great I can't see how? Mine is through 2 consumer units (house and a 2 way in summerhouse) with no probs.

You've had a bad experience there. Mine works fine from one socket circuit, via the main db, 30 metres of submain and two more dbs to another socket circuit in the workshop... Just a pair of BT branded units I rescued from a skip.

I have power line adapters over 50m apart through 3 dB's. ... house, main workshop and metal shop... speed is low but it works reliably... cheap adapters from ebuyer bought a our 6 years ago

If it helps anyone I have a brand new BT Business Hub 5 up for grabs gratis.
They are locked to BT or Plusnet as ADSL routers but they make excellent wifi repeaters on any network provider as they transmit on 2 frequencies.
They occasionally get sent to site when we have new lines installed but we tend to use either Cisco or Draytek routers.

Wire it so that you have a socket next to the house CU connected on a short spur to the same points as cable that feeds your workshop and plug one powerline adaptor into it, at the other end have another socket again on a short spur connected to the same cable where it connects to the CU in your workshop and plug the other adaptor in it, they are now linked by the feed cable to your workshop with nothing in between and will work fine.

My experience with Powerline hubs is that they work great if on a ring or a radial circuit, no so good if at all when the circuit goes through a consumer unit.

Ignoring every wiring reg out there. I just run a piece of plain cat5 above ground to the shed with a AP on the end. Don't care that it's not armoured as it's not carrying high voltage and if/when it breaks I will just replace it. It's been fine for 5 years so far.

As it's a data line I don't think it falls under any electrical regs Matt. At least that's what I tell myself when I do it

at 20 yards and no neighbours, would it work with a wifi extender? I just cat 5 cabled it to the closest point to the shed.. should give you sufficient signal. works at mine about the same distance.
