Common technique here is to talk to management about increased role demands, the possibility of a raise to cover them, or assistance to do the work required at the same pay grade . . . get that declined, talk to competitor, get a letter offering a job at much higher rate, show it to management, management suddenly find extra money from thin air . . .

Happened so often I have a suspicion that our ex-colleagues running the competitor do It simply to make our wage bill higher

My daughter earns £12.60. She works in a sports pub selling beer.

Back in the late 80’s I worked with a guy who had been taken on as YTS, learning how to be a setter operator on capstan lathes, £25 a week. Couple of years has passed since he’d started, and he’d progressed to setting up the two brand new CNC capstans we’d had installed, as well as just about every other machine in the shop.

But he was still on £25 a week!

Me and another ‘skilled’ guy, top earners on £5.50 an hour, told him he needed to get in and see the boss, get the sort of salary he deserved. Couple of weeks went by, and lots of trips into the office, and the young fella was then on £150 a week, instead of £25.

They’ll pay as little as they think they can get away with to keep you. If you don’t ask, no boss will volunteer to hand over more cash than he needs to.

What set this off more for me is what happened last October. Ok we get holiday / sick days etc etc. and bereavement days.
It was 3 days before me and my wife were going on holiday, my son in law was diagnosed with a brain tumour after he collapsed, It was at the end of October last year. Well whole family was distraught. My wife was in such a state, and still trying to cope now, as he passed away 7 weeks later. And that situation has shown how my work place is. Beside using the holidays to stay off work, I had only had 3 off days sick in two occasions. And as i had used all my holidays i said ill use my sick days that i have left, which they didnt like so i called it stress, which it was.. As it was my third time of by then in my sick days, i lost two days pay before i got paid for the remainder of 7 days
That month i lost £450 as they didnt pay me for a couple days of sick, and lost the bonus as i had time off, the remainder of the `sick days` and i had to have time off obviously. As the lad was not my blood relative they said they cant do anything. so i had to go to work once days had ran out and be on the phone as hospital wanted us there for updates and meeting etc. The lad was given a few months maybe to live. And work would not cover me for what time i needed left to be with my wife and Lee. Even had to clock out when i had to go quick.
I really dont know why i am still there if that how they treat staff, i am never late, rare as hell that i am ill and never undue time off.

My 17 year old Daughter gets £11.60 tidying up the shelves at TKMaxx whilst also doing A-levels. Started as a temp job for Christmas but kept on and has effectively a permanent job for as long as she wants and can increase hours in holiday periods etc. If she goes to Uni she can switch to a store wherever she goes. Will also get another pay rise at 18.

You deserve far more both in cash and respect.

A good employer earns respect from their employees, and respects them in return. there is endless evidence proving that people and businesses perform at their best when management and the workers realise that they both need the other - and neither side extracts the urine. Both sides need a degree of give-and-take, but when bad management is so short-sighted, then it's time to move on.

From what you have told us, it's quite clear that your employers have no interest in your welfare or how you are surpassing your job description. Waiting for them to realise what they are in danger of losing is likely to be an endless wait, likewise threatening to leave sounds unlikely to provoke them into action (other than holding a grudge against you) so that leaves the only realistic option of seeking alternative employment - and given how little they have been paying you, that shouldn't be too difficult (and a wage increase should be a well-deserved bonus!)

Yes there are those who just keep taking. There are those who respect effort.

My son had several jobs in quick succession due to redundancies at 3 places he worked at.
Then got a job at jewsons and they were annoyed he took pictures of the vehicles he was expected to drive. So when they tried to blame him for damage he just showed them the photos.
He was suspended for damage and the area manager was trying to rile him up. So he went for an interview at another company and they asked him to start next day. So he resigned with immediately. He had told them he was suspended.

During the next 6 years he was pulled from pillar to post as a driver when they found he could replace engines , finished his work one day and fitted the engine in the van as they were struggling with it.
So he ran HGV Pre MOT bay (VOSA send their own guys for a real MOT.
Switched between transport and maintenance for 5 years sometimes doing both.

In the end he ended up with a VAN and ran 4 guys over 3 sites in maintenance.
Then they wanted him to loose the van and take on Salary with no overtime payments , but still doing it if needed.
So he refused it.
But they put another guy who had never got his hands dirty in charge on 55k so my son just bided his time and one day he was told he was loosing the van whether he liked it or not......so he went to a company who had asked him to go to them but did not have vans.
My son wanted to be loyal but was not going to loose ghe van.

Anyway he worked he put his notice in the next day and 6 months ago moved to the new company.
After Xmas nor only did he pass his probation but he asked for a vehicle allowance as he was forever going to suppliers to get parts and hire tools etc.
So he now has a van with a budget for tools and he is on 10k more than his old place.

Only today the main boss asked him why he was still at work, there were about 6 workers off with similar symptoms , although he reckoned my son was the worst he had seen.

My son replied I don't go sick and apart that I have too much to do and we have equipment on hire.....the Boss turned to him and said I am glad we got you the van. I will remember this.

How things change in 6 months.

I'll try to keep a very long story short. I was in professional role for 19 years. I ended up doing alot of the tasks the director should have been. Great experience for me granted, but doing director level work continuously and treated very poorly. Pay was medium let's say but terrible boss, indeed a phycological bully.

Me and alot of the staff were there from we were 18 and didn't know any better. Covid hit and treated us like crap. Making us come into the office when country was supposed to be shut down. Police coming to office to ask why we couldn't work from home.... we were then sent home with laptops and final straw for me was finding out after working hard and overtime all through covid lock downs director was secretly claiming furlough on us too.

I left to another new role. That was coming up 4 years ago now. Great employer, really care alot about us. I was taken in and commended personally by the top director on the great job I am doing. My salary has almost doubled. Big bonus twice a year. Benefits. Flexi time. Extra annual leave. Totally life changing to be honest. I can now excel in my role and get rewarded fairly.

I would like to meet my old boss and thank him for being a tw#t and thus giving me the incentive to get out of there!!

I suspect given how they treated you regarding your son in law ...you really don't want to work for them anyway.
Hopefully you will find something else and leave on good terms, its futile to burn bridges if not necessary.

I left welding and went back to tightning nuts and bolts on flanges, more money. if you're willing to step out of your comfort zone and travel theres high paying jobs out there especially welding, there comes a point when you hsve to realise you're worth more than £12.60 ph the only person thats stopping you is yourself

That’s remarkable, imagine having so little respect and compassion towards people let alone staff that jump through hoops for them.

I left my last heavy haulage job because of a manager like that, he was newly appointed on a major power trip.

Definitely find a new job. Easier to get a job with a job as my grandpa always said to me.
