When a firm get a good natured bloke who can do more or less everything, they will if possible take the living pIssh on wages unfortunately. I was doing loads of multi trade stuff, welding, plumbing, occasional sparky, building, repairs, you name it, for virtually pennies.
I put up with it as it was kind of convenient to a point, but as here, all my mates said "ffs that sort of money is pathetic" type of thing.
The day after my 66th birthday (when pension kicked in) I walked away, bye bye. .
I your case I'd call their bluff and do likewise, when you tell them they'll likely do a quick about turn and offer you something better, though tbh you'd probably be best looking elsewhere.

They paid me whilst in hospital and for the first two months of recovery. They then let me work from home and I could only manage 5 hours a week. They insisted on paying me reduced sick pay for the next four months until I could work 3 days a week. I am back to two days and they are very supportive. Good companies do exist!

That’s remarkable, imagine having so little respect and compassion towards people let alone staff that jump through hoops for them.

I left my last heavy haulage job because of a manager like that, he was newly appointed on a major power trip.

Definitely find a new job. Easier to get a job with a job as my grandpa always said to me.

Not sure but the guy in question I used to get on with well till he tried to give me a pay cut to bring me back from furlow, whilst my two counterpart colleagues doing the same roll remained on the same wage. That was the start of it for me.

The personality traits of these people is what makes them want to have perceived power and control over other people, a bit like politicians and they are very often the last types you want in charge of anything!

The process is then repeated until they find themselves working at a level where they aren't any good... that's when the problems start as no-one wants to admit that they're no good at their job (if they're even aware that they're no good!) and the bosses who promoted them don't want to admit to having made a bad choice...and ultimately it's much easier to promote people than it it is to demote people (which can very easily become very expensive!)

What's the answer? I don't know - other than do the sensible thing and look for work elsewhere.

People who are good at what they do don't necessarily make good managers - managing is a whole different skill.

I can't manage - I can't put up with work shy, time wasting, slow moving, break taking, coffee drinking, no initiative, clock watching people.

People prepared to work at my speed, for as long as it takes, we get on well

We've currently got a manager who comes from another discipline, knows little to nothing about mechanical engineering, but is pretty good at managing us, the tasks etc.

I agree, managing a team is a skill, that takes time to learn. As you move up, the teams get bigger leading from the front, like you can with a small team doesnt work. Delegation and trust it gets done, along with patience takes effort to master, frustration takes much banging ones head off the desk in a darkened room to subdue!

Possibly because the "Peter Principle" has taken effect . They have been promoted to a grade above their capabilities and feel threatened.
Also because they were closet morons and were afraid to show it in case they jeopardised their chances of being promoted .( see first reason.)

As already pointed out, managing people takes a completely different set of skills to working with them, and I think that some new managers feel overwhelmed with the new responsibilities which they're not quite equipped to deal with. The only thing they feel they have power over, is that new power they have over others. So they use and abuse it.
Even at a very low subconscious level, this is true, and the empathy and common decency that they otherwise would have had, goes out of the window, and instead of fighting FOR their people when the chips are down, they just simply fight them.
I'm not saying I'm a great manager, but i absolutely do fight for my guys when they need it. Sometimes it makes a difference, whether its fair overtime pay, or not having to use annual leave just to visit the doctors
.. Just silly little things like that which can make a workplace feel good, or can make it feel awful...

I'd also suggest to the OP that he seriously seeks another gig. These days with stuff like Indeed - it's easy to job-hunt.
I spent WAY too many years working for a firm that treated staff poorly. I felt I was stuck there (as while I did a variety of tasks & roles, I never got properly trained & tickets that proved my competence - "investing in people" was not present. At all.
So - cue not getting pay rises, but you got required to take on more work, more travelling, more nights away, more hours. I didn't realise just how unhappy the environment was making me.
In the end, I got so miserable that I got properly shirty (I'd been tasked last-minute with a workload that needed 15-hour days, with approx. 120-miles driving every day, towing a heavy trailer every day for over 2-weeks solid - up at 4, on the road at 5, non-stop all day - to get back at 7 or 8 pm, then repeat (Note firm.woukd not pay overtime).... and they'd not even organise the job properly.
Long story short - it came to a head, they tried to strong-arm me, I rattled off multiple reasons and extensive knowledge of their business that made it clear that to continue their course was... unwise. We parted company. Coming up 2-years on, and I'm so glad to be out of there - you realise belatedly that making the leap isn't so terrible when you're in a carp workplace to start with.

People like the OP's employer tend to take & exploit, and will do all they can to prevent a wage increase for anyone - they are terrified that it'll set a precedent for others to seek more too. They'll gamble (& keep on gambling) even when they need a revolving door for staff starting & leaving - because that's their mindset & they only value your work, not you.
Don't stick it far too long like me - try somewhere else - if it doesnt work out better, you've lost little & can look again. Good people are hard to find, and there are still some workplaces which know that, and are willing to make more effort to retain good people.

I saw that at Rover, we had one of the HF (high frequency) sparks over to run some tests on one of our machines, he tried to connect to the live side of the isolator causing a short which set the isolator on fire, he lost his eyebrows and some of his hair, but the next time we saw him he was a supervisor in the HF dept.

That was one thing that always bugged me working offshore. Every year we had to put in our plan for improvements to our career, what we wanted to achieve, where we wanted to see ourselves in 12 months time etc. I hated the whole fiasco, I was quite happy just doing my job and getting paid, I didn’t want to be shift leader, or department head, or chief mechanic etc etc.

Management couldn’t stand that, it was part of their annual personal improvement plan to make people under them try to continually move up ‘the chain of command’.

The last couple of years I worked for them I simply refused to put anything sensible into my ‘career plan’. I think I told them I wanted to be captain of the ship, as my last entry in my career goal…..and a month or two later I was laid off. And retired, at 56, a lowly grease monkey, still.

In the courier lark, the small company I worked for had ex-forces, ex-fitters, ex-motorsports, ex-firemen, ex-you name it. All lured by the prospect of making a month's wages in a week. In the Golden Period, that was perfectly feasible.
