Why are pickups soooooooo BIG..?

In the USA you have the roads and the parking for them (plus fuel prices are kind of reasonable)...here in the UK (and especially in London) there's just no room I think.

I remember doing a fly drive to the west coast a few years ago....the Jeep Grand Cherokee we hired was just an average size car over there!

I agree, barely room down most country lanes for the more modern "compact" cars, even on our ordinary roads if get two 4x4's on the school run doing the darling deliveries and you end up in a stand-off. Most certainly wouldn't cope with anything bigger.

I used to run a diesel s10 4x4, that seemed big at the time, size wise its about on par with the latest offerings here.That said everything has grown, look at the old mini vs new.

You might be onto something there...I've seen a few 4x4s where the person driving can barely see over the steering wheel. Always reminds me of when we were kids and made Lego stuff...but the Lego people weren't to the right scale

In London they (4x4 drivers) have a habit of driving down the middle of the road (even when there's clearly room for 2 cars...with competent drivers!)...when this happens I go out of my way to do exactly the same.

Aren't the newer pick ups just a tax benefit thing not a serious work vehicle.

A few years back every man and his dog was getting crewcabs for that reason: classed as a commercial so the tax levy was minimal. They've got rid of that now which probably explains why same man and dog are now in the mechanised posing pouches made by Landrover.

I think that is the point their external dimensions are out of proportion to their usable capacity

Over the years my chiefs had L200s, Amaroks and Landrovers... I think the Nissan was the most spacious internally.
I found the L200 a cramped, shuddery thing, especially when towing a trailer to Portsmouth.
Hauling a Lotus Esprit 240 miles on a twin-axle on the back of the Connect (I didn't know it was overweight until some time later ) was a much more pleasant experience.
