I think the most likely problem is bad earthing. With a manual set it's just amps, the workpiece potential doesn't really come into it. But with a calculating set it expects the workpiece to be at IT'S earth potential. Ideally a 3 wire system would be better, with the earth sense being a separate lead. In instrumentation 4 wire systems are common place.Usually I would clean everything back to new metal. This is a jig so the welds aren't too critical. I will most likely be tiging the actual wishbone when I get round to making it.
As stated above, this is my first proper go with this kemppi. This isn't my first go at welding. I'll give everything a clean and go from there.
On my MIG set (Stahlwerk) I've got a volt setting which equates to arc length. Wire feed is ratioed, with a fast and slow option. Obviously with a bad earth the measured potential will be arc length + earth delta V. Which will subtract from the measured value. My work is non critical. No structural or road vehicle stuff. If the tractor collapses it'll be 'Me-in-Box' not Jack.
