Why are Lincoln so expensive???

i have seen the video before and it seems to me that they are polishing the red inverter that is just another chinese rebrand inverter. As paton goes i heard they where a good brand there are people on the forum that bought paton welders.
Yesterday i gone to leroymerlin (screwfix type in portugal) and i stumble on 2 bester inverters both made in china for bester in poland (owned by lincoln) and i was dumb found as i checked the duty cycle they where very low. On the specs that i found in internet they had almost the same duty cycle than lincoln. i´m glad that i didn´t order one.

Just as food for thought, quite a few places ive worked in the past 15years or so, have had all had Lincoln 405T stick welders in the yards/workshops. They simply keep gojng and going and going while other welders have simply given up. Im not talking tucked under a bench and burning 3.2mm vodex into a few fillets a day either. Im talking rolling out butts in heavywall pipework (18" plus in diameter and 3/4" thick) with fleetweld5p+ roots, 3.2mm lowhy hotpass then 5mm lowhy rods one butt after the other all day long. 4 or 5mm and sometimes even 6mm low hy and iron powders on plate work, structural steel and tanks and vessels with 200ft extension leads running out into a yard all day long.
Plenty of other makes simply cant keep it up without breaking down and going pop. These things simply keep going and going.

Ref. eddy currents: daleyd is right. As arther said, I too always thought that a coiled extension lead overheats due to eddy currents, but that's not the case.
An eddy current is induced in a conductor at 90 degrees to a changing magnetic field. The induced eddy current, if large enough and flowing in a closed loop, can cause heating. That is why transformer cores are made of thin laminations.
A high AC current in a coiled-up cable can create the changing magnetic field, but where is the other conductor? Unless you put a lump of iron in the centre of the coil, there isn't one, and so eddy currents don't apply here.

Correct......back then there was no European manufacture of Inverters...There were American ones and then rebadged Selco

If you quote the you get what you pay for comment then Lincoln hits the spot as my Lincoln mig was bought new in 1985 and still works perfectly and has seen 100s or poss 1000s of hrs of arc time,

How often do we see my welder is broke thread, generally with the cheaper brands.

I wasn't going to mention it, but I'm sending back a Lincoln Invertec 220tpx that's around 15 months old - something failed internally - was supposed to be collected on Monday, in fact. It would nark me, but it's actually a really nice unit to use and everyone loves it.

We like it so much that we'll probably buy another one when a Kemppi or Esab fails next (which they will) because they're a really well designed and made unit for a really good price. That, or a Lorch Micortig.

Anyone know where the TPX/Aspect range are made?

Thats true.......theres only so much saved by producing in China......decent components cost just the same wherever theyre made......modern factories arent labour intensive like the chinese plants......sometimes the major brands dont do themselves any favours by cutting costs so they can compete (on cost) with the cheap brands.....they make cheaper models that fail at the same rate as the chinese but, by doing so, they devalue their premium products.
Even on the same brand the cheaper sets wont last like the more expensive ones do

Lincoln own Bester in Poland. They make equipment there but these days Im not sure which ones (its 10 years since I left). That document is created by Bester but it doesnt necessarly mean the machine was made there. It could be rebadged but would still be certified by the name on the badge and not the manufacturer.

Personally, at the moment I own a MIG/multiprocess and 2 TIG sets. In my own workshop we have a second 300a MIG and 2 MMA sets- my brothers/cousin's. In the other workshop on the farm there's another smaller MIG and MMA set.

At work, there are 2 MIGs and 7 TIG sets, and 3 MMA sets, plus in the contracted sheetmetal workshop I got involved with their sets a little for MIG welding aluminium - probably another 4-5 sets in all.

I don't use em all but I'm generally responsible for repair/upgrades, servicing etc. And since I'm a gear junkie, I like to shop around and try different makes etc.

and you say your not a professional welder.......I know hundreds that are, and have never seen that many sets.....I reckon thats 20 sets....

At my workshop i use a lincoln v205 ACDC (rebadged Selco genesis) that never broke down and i use it in anger day in-day out... The welder next door has a pair of analog ito welders (looks similar to rtech 160 acdc welders)or something like that he swears by- he welds for a living. The welders are analog with a digital readout and they weld beautifully although they break every once in a while but our common friend- can repair them ! You do get what you pay for in this day and age...
