The problem being that aluminium wasn't going to be discovered for over 3000 years? That's a hell of a lead time to be quoted when you order material!

Just a thought, if you were using carbide inserts, were they designed for Ally or steel cutting, whilst you can use the ones designed for steel to cut aluminium, the carbides designed to cut Ally cut much better. Something to do with the geometry/shape of the cutting surfaces.

Quinn Dunki, known as Blondihacks, has an excellent Youtube channel.

She has a series of short videos on lathe and Mill basics. She uses fairly generic Chinese made machinery and she is an excellent teacher. I recommend.

Aluminium is one of my most favourite materials to turn. It finishes up so nicely providing all is well.
High rake, small rad tools for little lathes cut it an absolute treat.
It’s not difficult it’s just preparation. Every engineering task requires it. Sounds to me like your suffering with chatter but pics of the job and lathe set up would confirm.
Everything needs to be rigid. Excess overhang/extension of your job or tool will cause you chatter. As will a poor tool edge or a tool off centre. You address the basics it should improve a lot.

Right so here is what I have been doing - converted the lathe to an electronic screw thread - seems to work okay - now to make it all safe

If the last photo is your thread-cutting setup then your compound slide is set at a peculiar angle - normally it would be set to 30° for a metric thread. Although some people would just use the cross slide for incrementing the depth of cut, which means both sides of the toolmare cutting - which might explain your rough finish on aluminium. More detailed photos needed for any more detailed comment on the poor results you’re getting.

Doesn't that depend on which type of thread cutting tool is used too? So far I've only used the carbide insert type, haven't even tried to grind an HSS blank for example.
