they made my first one aso a wee blue thing with a couple of switches hi low and 1/2 think it had a wire speed knob also.

I don’t know the answer, but my little welding book says that MIG was developed for production welding, purely to save changing rods.

When was the first MIG welder invented?
MIG welding was originally invented in the 19th century when Humphry Davy discovered the electric arc. Originally, carbon electrodes were used but later substituted by metal ones.

first mig i used was by " Rubery Owen", a Rowan Arc ! then we got a few kemppi which had the luxury of a latching trigger
The first welded ship was built by Cammel laird in 1917/ Called the Fullagar. Worked very well apparently. They don't say which process was used though.
It was very carefully monitored to see if it was a worthy successor to rivets. And they say it was very strong and easier to repair.

Fullagar was built 1917-1920 882 at Cammell, Laird & Company in Birkenhead, UK as the world's first fully welded seagoing ship.

Interesting question - it would have to be O/A or ARC (GMAW) as they were probably the only candidates at that time. Probably O/A as that was reasonably well developed whereas ARC was established but still in its infancy and possibly not very portable.
