Who made the first MIG welder ?

I spent days welding Ford D series cabs with oxy Acetylene. Sweating, fires and burns were all commonplace.

I had years of it - the real step forward with MIG welding on cars is you only need one hand.

Getting yourself into position with two hands (torch and filler rod) - was awkward to say the least.

I can remember brazing them as well...

I really only do a few MOT sill patched repairs now - can't recall the last full sill I put on.

I got my first MIG welder in my garage circa 1988 - up until that point I was still welding cars up with Oxy Acetylene.

I think I was early into getting a MIG in a garage.

It was an SIP welder. It long gone.

I bought my first one second hand in 1987,off a garage!

I know that a Dr Martin Boot pioneered the air cushion sole in the 1800s. Seems that street fights of the time weren't lasting long enough for the baying onlookers. Apparently the hobnail boots that were common back then meant it was all over very quickly.

That according to my Viz annual.

They made a fillum about that, called Da's Boot.

I had no idea that the process was that old; the first MIG machine that I saw was a BOC Autolynx at a garage where my mate was working as a mechanic; I seem to remember that it cost some astronomical amount of money (by the standards of the early 70s). It was almost exclusively used for welding top plates etc. on rusty Ford Cortinas and the like.

I didn't get round to buying a MIG till the mid 80s. That wasn't a cheap purchase by the standards of the day either.

I have the the 180 Mono, Bought around the same time and around the same price, It already had the Euro torch fitted. Still using it. It has had a couple of hiccups but nothing terminal.
