My Mitutoyo caliper is cycling through the numbers!
I pulled the display off and cleaned it, there was condensation in it.
Cleaning it out usually fixes errors, but not this time.
I have just mailed Mitutoyo to see if they flog new reader bit's!

So I am using a vernier, no batteries or water in the works to worry
about.

That I haven't tried. I will.
I found a price list and a new reader 2 years ago was over a hundred dollars, you can buy the whole thing in bits.

Maybe reading a vernier will improve the old eyesight, I used to have eyes like a hawk, small beady and I could
spot a mouse at thousand yards.

What model is it? I have a Mitutoyo Vernier Code No: 500-321 serial no. 7009493 with a busted battery cover. Mitutoyo told me they are no longer available. If yours is the same model and ends up needing to go to meet the vernier in the sky I would be keen to take the battery cover off you.

My old Mitutoyo 500-something threw it's toys out of the pram at about 8degrees C last week. Can't remember if it gave an error code or just gibberish as I put it away sharpish. It has a newish battery & it started to behave when I got home into the warm.

I bit the bullet and bought some new mitutoyo calipers. Hopefully I won't need to buy another
set for 30 year.


I just went to pack some treader brakes to post them and wondered if I could pack them less
them 25mm high[large envelope] I reached for the calipers and guestimated the thickness of
the packet. Then I realised I was using the old calipers and they were working!

Bladevane, yes it's a 500-321, serial 0001085. All spares are available. I did find a new reader
head for mine, but it was $136 plus shipping! I think the covers are pretty cheap, if you have four other people who want one-they come in a pack of five- and the other four work in the city.

I was rather hoping that if your vernier was being scrapped you might donate the battery cover. I've approached Mitutoyo but was told they no longer stock this part which is 145171.

My mitutoyo digital verniers are over 20 years old now and never gave a minutes trouble, unless the battery was dying. The problem with buying new ones is can you dodge getting fakes, so many out there now, everyone seems to be selling them.

My Old Mitutoyos (same as your originals) would start misbehaving when it was well below zero which was quite often in my last workshop. Shoved them in my jacket pocket for a while and they would start behaving until they got too cold again, they seemed to condensate inside probably due to the cold air but the electronics being slightly warm.

I went over to coolant proof ones and never an issue withthem even when it gets cold enough to freeze the coolant in the machines Thankfully that is not very often.

My last set of Coolant proof ones cost me £65.

My old calipers sat on a 30degree heater for a few days and still didn't work. Seems being stuck in the toolbox and not used for a few weeks has taught them a lesson;-)

Cheapest branded calipers I could find were Tesa value ones at 59quid. I love Tesa gear, but I think Value may mean made in china rather than some old watchmaker sitting in his cabin in the mountains lovingly making them. The Mitutoyo calipers seem to have the edge with their own technology and long battery life. The ones I bought don't have the spc output, that saves you a chunk of dosh. It seems like you need to buy from a Mitutoyo distributor if you want to be sure you are sent what you wanted.
I bought from mqs.co.uk they were 69 squids through Amazon, the price direct was 69+vat.

As you can see the new calipers are not bothered by the cold, both calipers were in the same toolbox and the old ones are very feint. The battery sign is on
but it has a new battery in it and it was bright when it was warm. I haven't tried reading the new ones without specs.

Bladevane do a google search for the part number, mitutoyo told me the reader for mine was not avaiable but I found one on current price list on yank site. If I do decide to bin it you can have the battery cover.

Some of the cheaper ones can be sometimes rejuvenated after a couple of days in the airing cupboard if you have one. Or as some folks suggest put the calliper in a jar of dry rice (uncooked of course)

The aldi/lidl digital calipers were a dead loss to me. Bought a few sets over the years and they all died very quickly. Where as the mitutoyos just kept on going. I suppose you get what you pay for in this world.
