Which spray gun to buy ?

bought the Sealey s701g last week as my Devilbiss has lost its air cap and im not paying 65 squids to replace it so i bought this gun the Sealey s701g and after two uses the gun not only performs but it resembles the quality of my Devilbiss and more. The best bit is its only 32 squids on amazon and ebay.

What size air compressor do you have? Looking at the manual for this spraygun it looks like it needs 18cfm anything lower will affect the paint finish as it won’t atomise the paint properly.

As I said in the other thread, I would also tend to follow the TDS of the paint supplier, the gun manufacturer doesn't know what you are going to be spraying with it.

Devilbiss had charts for the gti pro range of sprayguns for different paint manufacturers

If the water trap is limiting the pressure you can adjust then I would suggest it is probably the issue.

As I said in the other thread, I would also tend to follow the TDS of the paint supplier, the gun manufacturer doesn't know what you are going to be spraying with it.
E.g. I use a lot of maxmeyer which states for a gravity fed gun with a 1.3 fluid tip you should use 3 - 3.5 bar. So I start with that and then adjust and test the until the desired results are obtained.
Orange peel can also be caused by other factors such as the quanitity of thinners and the temperature on the day you are spraying and how you lay the paint on.



I set the gun to the settings recommended and adjust the fan and fluid until I get hand span with a nice even spray pattern.
Pretty much the same procedure no matter which gun you use.

Yes, it seems that this water trap i have on the gun had the knob missing (did not see it). So i used pliers to turn what i could and it opened slightly. So iv decided to buy another water trap. It arrived today.

It does seem like there are a couple of different versions so could be possible to use successfully with a 14cfm compressor

I’ve had the Sealey Golds, just so you know they don’t have the fan or atomisation of a decent gun.

Sorry thought you had a 14cfm compressor but looking at your other post it seems you only have a 5cfm compressor which will struggle to work this spraygun correctly

It works fine. I have already sprayed 3 panels with this gun (not counting the testing panel) under a CFM not recommend by Sealey. The results are great with very very little orange peel (nothing 2000 grit wouldnt sort out). Water trap is to blame as I have tested the gun on a practice panel without the water trap with zero orange peel.

I have been also told that my compressor won't support a DA Sander, yet it does but not for very long at decent psi. Good for feathering out and resort to electric sander for deep rust.

Ha, so it does seem like I am using Version 2 of the Sealey s701G. Seems to work for me on 5cfm. How good can this gun get well I will never know as I'm getting a 14cfm compressor still 4 short of 18.

you want the water trap as close to the spray gun or tool as possible, hot air straight from the compressor can carry water vapor through the trap ……..

As close to the spray gun as possible would be adding 1m (all i have) of air hose between the air compressor and water trap? Then connecting my 10m hose to the water trap?

I think this particular water trap would get in the way if it was anywhere near the gun.

Internal BSP threads are always parallel thread, so will generally suit BSPP and BSPT fittings. Just to clarify

Hi my first post , I own a Triumph Vitesse saloon 1969 , I’ve owned her 4 years now and completed most of the mechanics and now time to address the paintwork . She was restored in 2012 including a poor cellulose respray , looks acceptable from a distance but close up shows poor filler work . Blistering has started in some areas . The stage I’m at is practicing on a spare boot lid and the results are not printable yet , plenty of practice in removing runs . I’m looking for recommendations for a better quality spray gun . My current one was included in an SGS compressor deal so looking to buy a better HVLP gun. The compressor is a 100litre 3hp . I plan to spray section by section eg boot , doors , sills etc . Most items will be removed and sprayed in a separate workshop . I’m using cellulose Triumph Valencia Blue . Can I get away with purchasing just one spray gun ?

Any suggestions as to which gun I should buy would be appreciated .

I too own an SGS compressor. I bought an air tool kit with it. It had a gravity fed white cupped spray gun. They are conventional pressure. You can run them about 50psi but if you go too high a pressure or too thick a paint they spit or make a wheezing sound. I’ve also had paint leak out from the sealing washer around the fluid needle before. If you have a gun cleaning kit with brushes don’t scrub where the fluid needle goes through. It’s a felt washer and I think mine wore down. Doesn’t leak anymore so I think it resealed itself with the paint around it? My other guns have solid plastic or something to seal them instead

UPDATE
Hi I’ve purchased the Devilbiss SLG 610 and used it for the first time today and very pleased with the result but stopped spraying after the 2nd coat as it was painfully obvious my preparation wasn’t good enough . I spend several hrs removing the runs using a technique I picked up from the gunman . I covered the Cellulose runs with Upol Dolphin 1k stopper and blocked the run with 320 grit until the run had disappeared , then 400 and 600 . I had many runs to deal with and it was useful practice to learn the procedure . My big mistake was that the inner boot was smooth but not flat and as soon as the spray started the flaws become obvious . So it’s back to Improving my blocking technique and to use a guide coat before using the gun again . Any advice welcome View attachment 233876
