Which of these hard drives..

All depends on how you need to access the data, i have found the best solution for me after years of trying different solutions is a NAS on the home network for office and workshop combined with Dropbox for working in remote locations.

I have WD MyCloud. I use it to back up the hard drives in my computer every day with Acronis, that way if I have an issue I have backups to restore from. I can also access the info from my phone and workshop computer if I want as it is always connected to my network.

I can see why you use acronis. I managed to get another pc running with 500gig harddrive and a 3 TB storage internal.

I already got the 3TB my cloud home running but ........the drag and drop says move andit doesnt. It just copies. But whilst doing so there is no indication its is doing so.
Once done there is no simple way i can see of comparing the drive contents you have just copied in terms of size.


Do you use compression in acronis or just plain files?

Oh and can i also use the usb port to copy files instead of the network so it can see the NAS as a drive?

Not really sure what you are meaning regarding drag and drop but if you press and hold the shift key whilst dragging/dropping it should move rather than copy.

I don't use Acronis for file/folder backup, I backup complete drive/partitions with it.

I can, if I want, mount the backups, it then is like a virtual drive where I can browse it and grab anything I need from it. If I get a corrupt drive or a dead drive I can use the backup to restore to the original drive or a new one.

Right i see....yes usually working between folders in windows when you drag and drop you can toggle between move and copy.
Doing this in the cloud interface in a browser it does not toggle......it actually says move. But does not move it but copies it...very strange.

I can see the benefit of backing up that way. And mounting to recover files. I will do it like that later .But presently i am trying to copy all files to my new PC from about 8 smaller drives in the older PC without removing them for now.

Once they are all on the same drive i can check them for duplicates and cull a lot quite quickly. Then go through whats left.

My plan then is to split the 3tb drive in the new PC so i can backup in partitions.


After that the old PC will have two 1Tb drives reinstalled as it runs of a 250 SSD for operating system. This will be for utube files for grandson to watch.

Following that i will be running plex as a media centre on another PC.........eventually.

I think i have found one answer.

But it then goes on to say this

And

 Given that there is only one drive inside there"

Answers another question. It explains why it has an A type USB port.

lol yeah I just checked the box etc. Nothing and then.
looked in the cloud install. Its right at the bottom on the left almost hidden on my system.

I find macrium reflect or Clonezilla the best for cloning drives.
Norton Ghost used to be great until they ruined it!

Bit confused now.

Would you expect to be able to see the NAS using WD discovery on 2 PC'S .

I can only see it from one...

I can see it via browser....but its saying no WD devices on the system..

Yet another update...i installed WD discovery on my laptop......and as expected i can see the NAS exactly as i can on my old PC.

Strange i can not see it doing the same on my new PC. I have even turned the firewall off to see if thats blocking it.
On the two machines that work there is actually a link in WD Discovery that says "can not see devices" that is missing on the new one

ITS NOT....it was blinkin windows 7 fresh install. It seems like the .net frame work was installed but it needed some updates from windows. so some 300 updates later it finally all works.

It was soon obvious when I actually tried hard wire networking my laptop. It could not be the router or IP address it had to be the local machine but with a fresh install I expected it to all function correctly.

Just the VPN to sort now so blacklists wont affect me.


Anyone picking up this thread do be afraid to ask questions ....although how long I will remember all the things I did I dont know.

Just got a load of files to move round now.
