Where to weld?

How would you get power to the street in the first place

definitely one of those jobs to outsource in your situation. Bad enough welding rusty sills in a garage let alone out in the wind and rain.

that’s before health & safety comes into play.

The closest I've got to welding in the street was doing some necessary amendments to the failing posts on next door's front gate. The entire time I made sure that my body was shielding the arc from any passers-by or if working with the arc in view, keeping my ears open and checking the road was clear before starting.

I’d bet it’s against the law to carry out any kind of work on a public highway.

Not quite. It's illegal to carry out routine but ok to carry out emergency work on vehicles. Can't remember which act.

^^ I think it depends on the local authority but you cant do it for money, that is illegal i do know.

wether its allowed or not i dont think its advisable and i wouldnt be doing it. You must know someone who can let you have a bit of ground, shed, drive etc for the short term and then set a week aside and crack into it

I live in a flat & want to practice welding, in readiness to weld on my camper.

I don’t have a driveway & my van is parked on the street. The first thing I’m looking to weld is an inner and outer sill.

Am I allowed to weld in the street??? It’s a quiet street & can wait until people aren’t passing by. Maybe 5 cars & 3 people pass by the van per hour...?

Or should I just pay someone to do it...

Easy solution for space to weld is to rent a garage that allows you to store one vehicle. Depending on the size of your van, where you live and permission granted by the owner you can find some for 20 quid a week on Gumtree.

If i was you i would not let this opportunity escape you by giving it to someone else through lack of space! The wealth of experience learned and the money saved second time around (sills wont last forever) far out ways the inconvenience and the expense starting out.

Just remove the idea of welding in the flat and the street!!

You don’t listen to the advice given to you do you, on your other post it was explained to you that you would need a big & expensive generator & basically it is unfeasable at a reasonable cost, next thing you are giving advice to someone to get a generator. LISTEN TO THOSE THAT KNOW, THEY HAVE TRIED!

If its your first attempt I would be tempted to pay some one, must have a local Land Rover type bloke nearby who welds them back together.
Just had my camper done by our local one, top quality and good value.
By the time you have bought the welder, taught your self to weld etc, the common issue is the weld will look fine but won't have penetrated to both bits of parent metal and will fall off.
Many years ago I welded a Metro back together in the street with a borrowed welder as I have no money so no option so it can be done, but I could already stick and gas weld and had fabrication experience so it was easy for me. Inner and outer sills both sides, new wing, front panel, bulk head and boot floor possibly more!

Most of my welding on cars was done on the street, but that was 30 odd years ago, in a village, in a quiet culdesac. The results were usually enough to get a car another years mot, but they'd never have won any prizes. Personally now I wouldn't even take on a welding job lower than the bottom of a door unless the vehicle was on a ramp let alone outside.

I shall re post an earlier though ,,, welding isnt the issue , its not wise to go cutting inner and outer sills on the same side of a vehicle , unless you know what your doing no matter where you do it.

The other way to look at it may be like this
If you wanted a vasectomy , , you wouldnt buy a Stanley knife and go looking for a medical book.

It is totally illegal and while there is variation between councils the first thing they hit you with is Health & Safety, you would then be required to adequately screen off the entire area, difficult if overlooked by flats, you would have to apply to the council for a TRO to temporarily block the pavement, costs, and any cables you run would have to be limited to 110 volts and run at specific heights above the pavement.

Do exactly the same thing on a driveway and its perfectly legal; remember councils are looking to make money anyway they can to recoup losses from covid.

Post a news clipping, where someone has been prosecuted, I bet there aren't many if any.

I dont think its illegal if you arent doing it for reward. Depends on council byelaws but i dont think theres a statute about it. They would get you other ways, H&S; Environmental etc etc. It may not be illegal but pretty daft and definitely antisocial!!
