Just use the VW friction plate with the mazda centre spline fitted in it...for example, s2000 engine, s2000 flywheel + friction disc with renault centre spline rivetted in:

Prior to that we were using a different engine with a little 200mm VW flywheel, pressure plate and friction disc, again, with a Renault centre in it:

If the starter is on the engine, easy job, if it's on the bellhousing make it bolt to the adapter plate you'll be using.

The guy who came to measure up for us was talking about doing it this way too but we would still need to get a suitable flywheel, pressure plate and friction plate (£350 minimum), have a spacer made for the flywheel, adapt the friction plate, adapt the adapter plate (and possibly the gearbox bellhousing) and the starter is still in a bad place for our build. With a custom flywheel apart from the adapter plate everything else is stock. We will discuss it again when he comes back but unless the custom flywheel is prohibitively expensive we will probably go with it. I only know of too other builds which are the same as ours and they went with a custom flywheel.

yes it is a diesel sorry for the late response.i think the problem with broken cranks are poorly made out of balance flywheels causing vibration.

I will have to pop one in my Passat soon, the bite is getting high (only 160k!). What kit did you fit?

I would think your first job would be to make the adapter plate that will allow you to mount the gearbox to the engine so the first motion shaft fits into the crank bearing, of course it may not fit, in this case you will either have to strip the gearbox and turn down the bearing journal or remove the crank and open up the end. once you have this in place all your other measurements can be worked out.

You're right about getting the adapter plate made first and we are in the process of doing that. The first motion shaft on the Audi gearbox isn't supported by a bearing on the crankshaft, but the Mazda's was, so we are intending to incorporate one in the custom flywheel. If we end up using an off the shelf solid flywheel this could probably be included in the spacer which would be needed to compensate for the thickness of the adapter plate.

luk i think, but they say v6 golf flywheel and clutch fits straight on 1.9 pd and is usually perfectly balanced

It does if you quote the rest of the sentence. It's proportional to the rate of engine acceleration.

I'll have to look into that. Have to agree about bearings giving trouble but never considered using just a bush. I take it P/bronze is polished bronze or am I missing something?

the usall recipie for a solid flywheelon golf is, a G60/ABF flywheel ( or the flywheel off anything with a 02A gearbox and a 228mm clutch ) and a VR6 friction disk and pressure plate

dosent work on a passat tho, they have an inline engine arrangement and the starter sits up the side of the enigne on the transverse layouts the starter sits allongside the gearbox hence starter ring is in diffrent places

P/Bronze he means phosphor bronze - to be honest Oilite works as well as anything and it's pretty cheap and commonly available in a lot of sizes, I do tend to use needle bearings on the racers but they're taking much more RPM's than your VAG engine will be running to, so not really necessary.

I usually use PB bushes for all the engines especially the high revers like 10,000 rpm bdx,s hondas etc in fact the last one i made was for an RX7 coz the needle rollers couldnt handle it and turned them selves into a sprag bearing seizing
the first motion into the crank and brinelling the end of the shaft , same thing happened to a red top, I am doing for rally GB.

spot on that man, I remember now, I picked up a golf one to fit, but as stated the starter ring was in the wrong place.
Have been thinking about getting a mk11 escort estate to use as a chase car, bilsteins and an atlas and fitting a 130 pd in it, a bit of breathing on it to get 150 ish, best of both worlds a classic that goes like a greased chip and running on chip oil. At 50 mpg.
I was planning to fit my rover v8 but is the noise worth 10 mpg. HUMMM tempting .

The needle roller brgs CAN be fine, but if they do break up they can knacker the 1st motion shaft in a very short time, with the heat/ dust etc from a solid unsprung twin plate plus the harshness of the pick up it can make their life hard whereas PB bushes seem to last and last and dont give any problems, after all the bush doesnt do a lot of work, and is self lubricating, if the tolerances are ok the clutch tends to self-center itself.

Bearings are cheap and easy to get. I suspect if good quality and properly fitted they would be fine.

PB bushes are cheap and can be made to suit a worn shaft or a 'strapped down damaged one' if needed.

Yeah, that's why I normally just pop an oilite in the low rpm stuff, works fine, like I say, we always ran a sleeve on the shaft for the RX-8s and now the honda into the bearing, at least then if it does chew up it's just a £4 Speedi-sleeve and not a new first motion shaft!

I'd be happier with self lubricating sintered bronze consideration its location to the clutch and likely to get quite warm but you may have to incorporate some sort of seal to protect it from clutch dust.

As a matter of interest I have just got back in now from changing the 7.25 twin plate ap clutch on the escort, started slipping on sweet lamb stage on rally gb I have redone the engine and its giving a lot of low down torgue only revs to 7800 had a quick look at the Pb crank bush bush was fine . imo Pressure plate needs more clamp to stand the extra power .

What clamp load are you running? We often run an AP 7.25 cerametallic on the 3.5 V6's without touching them for a full season - that's with the OH80-SF cover/setup.

not sure what cover pressure was i think it was the 60 but cant be sure, the new plates cured the slipping, but not for long I believe, as pedal feels very soft, but the car has been reversed loads times out from the workshop 150 metres in the dark, up hill, with somebody quiding him back, on the clutch, i've told them not to do it but they dont believe me. The heat build up is intense on cerametalic plates.
