Just seen in the news, that the two fertilizer/co2 plants have been kept open in a deal with the Uk government, and that the tax payer will foot the bill.

Not necessarily. I think it's just that those of us who've been working through had the luxury of dealing with emptier roads, hence less numpties, than usual, hence just forgot how bad it normally is.

That first lockdown was bliss, for a month or two. Driving was practically a pleasure, when people were barred from unnecessary travel.

I'd happily go back into lockdown tomorrow. I know for a lot of people it's been a nightmare but for me it was the perfect world.

Hasn't affected my workload, people are still booking jobs in with me months and months in advance.

£50 quid extra a day makes a huge difference and helping to offset the increased costs were seeing now.

Am I right in thinking that our "free market" advocating government has, in the past fortnight, voted to impose a regressive tax on to the poorest of our society, and is now, literally, giving money to a large American firm to support the production of CO2?
...so as an industry that largely conflicts with their pretence at environmental conscience (eat meat, don't eat meat, but never pretend it's not one of the most environmentally costly ways to produce food) can continue to function?

Again, UC £20 uplift being cut, to "help" the market get people back to work, whilst American firms are being subsidised with UK tax payer money, by a government that rode it's way into power on a wave of nationalism?
Why is Adam Smith's invisible hand only worshiped when someone poor needs £20, but not when a foreign party needs a few more quid to power someone else's stun guns?

I was self-employed up to late 2012, turnover of ~£30k a month, making about ~£10k a month. I won't bore you with why it ended, suffice to say it was 'external influence'. Do I miss it? well, I miss the (tax-deductible) income, I don't miss the stress though. I'm working for 'the man' on 40% of what I used to earn but with 95% less stress and paid holidays. Despite being booked up months in advance, I was always chasing more and hated having days off, chasing the dollar became an obsession, It paid for a good life but it always felt transient.

That was small! just me and a fairly niche market with work all over Europe & North Africa, very different to the work I used to do in the 90's & early 00's in the Balkans, dark Africa, middle east and south Asia. I enjoyed the work - both 'trades'. The slump in 2008/9 forced a re-evaluation of income streams, basically moving from 'nice-to-haves' to predominantly 'got-to-haves' but thankfully turnover & profit ratio stayed very similar (I did have a bit of a reprise at my old job, due to popular demand, in 2009 which helped massively). I miss the freedom, I don't miss the self-inflicted 'worry' and financial responsibilities, I'd do it all again though.

Genuinely curious now.

Thankfully traveling 15 miles down the road doesn't generate quite the same stress as Africa etc.

for feck sake I've just switched to avro from edf as it has a cheaper tariff.

That may have been a mistake looking at how small they are
