I took my then girlfriend to Blackpool for a romantic weekend. We spent most of a day in the TVR factory at Bispham, just up the tram line from Blackpool. I got loads of bits plus a tour of the factory.Always liked the shape of the early TVR`s, I have one thats to be butchered into a replica of this.
The digs were pretty grim and it was Scotch week, which meant the place was full of Scots. I remember going to a nice pub and suddenly being surrounded by 'em. "you don't mind if we sit down and join you and talk to your girlfriend do you laddie?" I think it was a rhetorical question

VAG in the USA did a big recall on cars with the tfsi engine fitted. High oil consumption due to dodgy piston rings. That engine was used in many cars including VW - Audi, Skoda and SEAT. In the UK for a long time they denied there was a problem leaving many people seriously out of pocket. My brother bought a 3 year old A5 tfsi Quattro with 23,000 miles on the clock from a main dealer. Knew about the problem. Luckily by this time Audi were starting to admit there was a problem. And yes his car was one of them. They fitted a fully rebuilt engine - cost was £9000 - didn't have to pay a penny luckily. Audi tried to say before this that 1L of oil every 500 miles was normal

+1 for the above.
We don't rebuild these - for any reason - normal failures are cam follower wear or timing chain tensioner problems or full chain failure.
Reason why is - these engines can start using excessive oil at any time (piston ring problems). Once I have written a customer a big bill for a head rebuild or chain - they gonna blame me when it starts using oil out of the blue. I just gracefully refuse them now...
I owned one once - low mileage VW Passat 2.0 DSG Turbo estate - 200hp - mine did not drink oil. But the ticking noise from the HP petrol injection sounded awfull - nice car to drive thou.

I have heard 1L per 1000miles being quoted by a VAG dealer for a brand new car with a TFSI as being acceptable oil consumption.
I would not think that was acceptable - if it was my brand new car I had bought and paid for - would you?
I seen these engines breathing hard @ low mileages - puffing from dipsticks and smoking from inbuilt rocker cover mushroom breathers.

) on our way up to Troon .T'was also Scotts week , we lodged in a tiny £10 for the night front upstairs bed room adjacent to the stair well in a 3/4 bed about 150 yards from the base of the tower . All night from 12 till about 06.30 hrs hordes of well oiled happy noisy jocks with their kiddies in tow streamed past our window.
Sleep was impossible so I sat on the end of the bed around 02.30hrs. talking to several groups , never realised till then that they called it Scotland on sea & it was a long standing tradition to go to Blackpool or Scarborough during their factory fortnight shutdowns. Second night in the digs we got numerous jars of brew down our necks & eventually slept well.
That's how VW cheated with their Bora's (1 litre oil per 600 mile / 1000 km miles ) to allow them to claim such long intervals between oil changes .. The tollerances between pistons and cylinder wall were at the best considered very excessive , They did lower the friction in the engine though as so much oil was being used . Which was channeled back via the exhaust emission control system to be burnt in the cylinders .
At that time ca 1992 IIRC. My eldest daughters partner had a brand new VW BORA as his company car and was horrified to have to put three litres of engine oil in it whilst driving from Cambridge to Inverness & back over a three day period . The company soon got rid of all of the Bora's as many were suffering engine failures because of the lack of oil situations .

Saw a brand new Ford Maverick truck in the parking lot yesterday, when he started it and idled out of the parking space, I thought...Huh, must be a diesel ?

In '67 a mate bought my 650ss and decided to race as well so needed transport . we shared my van. So he bought what has to be the cheapest vehicle ever ,until I hear different, a Bond 3 wheeler with Villiers 9e motor (197cc) he offered £1. 0 pound but the owner said it's not worth that and gave him 10/- change . Personally I thought he was still overcharged but it lasted a year or so.

A Bond Minicar presumably? I’ve put this before, but a local lad had one & was driving over the common & a horse sat on the bonnet, turned the convex curve of the front concave. You’ve heard the term @rse like a circus horse, well this was a bonnet like it.

The same . Any hill steeper than very gentle required the passenger to get out and 'assist'. My oppo proudly showed the chamfered off front left and right front lower corners and developed a controlled 2 wheel cornering style. Daring stuff at 35mph.
Can anyone imagine todays yoof having that kind of fun.

A friend of mine had a Coronet Talisman Twin three wheeler, that ended up with the fibreglass worn away on the rear corners. The previous owner had fitted a straight through silencer on it, totally unsuitable for a 2 stroke as it absorbed all the oil. I needed a silencer & fitted it on my Morris Minor, it was like a wartime battleship order “MAKE SMOKE MAKE SMOKE” until it burnt off, it obliterated the street!

I used to have a self repaired roll damaged Reliant Super Robin , with a paving slab fibre glassed down in the back . Lovely little beast it kept my head and feet dry and at 70 plus MPG was brilliant at the time my ex wife walked out leaving me with £6 k of debts and two kiddies back in 1984 .
We went everywhere cut price for three or so years .

Quite a rare beast these days. Back in the late 70's I was working up in the north of Scotland where two lads (brothers) working in a small car workshop ran a couple of them Not sure what they'd done to them but they were bally quick (and noisy!).
