Back in '69, I towed a 26ft yacht from St.Tropez to Poole. Used an Austin Champ which I picked up for £45. It managed 9mpg; but two star and a lot cheaper then. Made the trailer too. Quite an interesting trip, to put it mildly..
Without the trailer, the Champ was a hoot to drive. Unlike a landie, it had rack and pinion and you could drift it on round abouts. Flat out with the screen down was good for over 90mph. Even the London taxis steered clear of you

Aye, and keeping the empty 'strip top' pint oil cans so that in quiet spells you could crush the lip where you poured from with pliers, gently heat the can and save the residual oil to sell......

Aye, plus change! One of my school holiday jobs was serving petrol [remember when they did that? ] at a nearby filling station

I did that too, a 96 year old did the other shift, he still drove and I remember asking him what job he used to do before this he said "Petrol pump attendant!"

The part of the job I hated was dipping the tank at the end of shift and working out your sales, any shortfall came out your wages. When it was really busy some folk worked the pumps themselves, though could just reset the pump part way through filling up and you missed what they had put in - some days you paid to work there

My cheap petrol days were £-s-p .Old money, Petrol was 4s-10p per gallon, But I was only earning £3-9s-1p a week as an apprentice!!! In those days our annual pay rise was around 2p per hour, And don't forget there were 240p to the pound,

I passed my test in February’67, & I could by 4 gallons for a pound at the local Jet station, I think I got 4 pence change as well. When Embassy cigarettes came out they were 1/11d for ten if I remember correctly, this would be about 1963 or 4, not that I bought them or smoked them as I was too young

Who remembers going up the woods & smoking bettytwine? I don’t know if the spelling is right, the dried creeper thing.

I got a watch with the Green Shield stamps I got from petrol, it lasted me about the same time as a tank of petrol as well!

I used to use a set complete with the small counter balance weighs that were checked and passed Ok for weighing tubs of other peoples honey when I was a running a collection point for the First Honey Cooperative back in the 1990's Also had an ancient stainless steel set of bar scales for weighing full barrels .

In the early 60's a new toilet tissue came to the market called " Trust " .... it wasn't long before the wags had the ditty of " When you thrust , rely on Trust " the only problem was .....if it was even an ever so slightly damp job ............. you couldn't

Anybody besides me remember smoking the Tesco lettuce leaf cigarettes' they sold in the mid to late 1960's .. Think this might have been them , but I seem to recall " Tesco Red " , red diagonal strips up from mid left to rh top .

I thought as a 17 yr old I was suave , sophisticated and clever ... pretty wrong wasn't I ?
They tasted evil .. I should have given up the silly idea of smoking there & then .. I'd have been worth a small fortune by the time I packed it up way back in 1986.

At the height of the green shield stamp thing a friend and myself borrowed a beetle to do the Edinburgh Trial . All the owner wanted was the stamps from the fuel we bought. As I hadn't passed my test I couldn't drive so to pass the time I stuck all the stamps around the roof . When we returned the car the owner asked where were the stamps . We shouted inside!! and scarpered. Not impressed!!

I gave up to go road racing in '66 . Better a quick exit than a long drawn out one.

Fifty years back out local small shops would sell cigarettes singly and a glass of lemonade from a big bottle, Around that time there were "Domino" make cigarettes sold in little packets of four!! Honestly don't know how folks can afford to smoke cigarettes now at around £10--00 for twenty, I still enjoy my pipe, but only now and again, a couple of weeks between Puffs!

good old number 10 fags . sweepings up of the floor the western oriental gentleman at the corner shop would sell you individual faggs if you couldnt aford to buy a packet of 10 that was when they were 20 pence a packet . desperate times when u started work at 15 and was on £2,50 a week

I remember freddos being 10p (now 25!) and the beano was 30p a week. ahhh the early 90's was a great time to be alive
