Terrible gear, at least the modern paper comes with traction and abs which will stop it coming to a rest on your neck

When I were a lad you got 4 gallons of petrol for a quid! Remember one saturday waiting for my mate to show up in his mk1 escort so we could go to the pub, he arrived in his best gear, as I was, with a slipping clutch, so we rolled it over my pit, donned the overalls and changed the clutch in 30 minutes. Did a Volvo V70 with a ramp a couple of weeks ago, major strip down including disconnecting steering rack and dropping the subframe, only took 1 1/2 days!

Most of the time I only put in a gallon of petrol. It was a bit of a joke when I was driving an 8mpg car, it was best part of 4 miles
to the garage. And 4 miles back.
When I worked at one place, I often rolled down the hill to the nearby garage on thursdays and "borrowed" a gallon of petrol till the next day.


Izal was probably used to prevent the brown finger, normal paper would have got damp in the outside khasi.

Aye, plus change! One of my school holiday jobs was serving petrol [remember when they did that? ] at a nearby filling station

Up until about 5 years ago the garage I worked at near Saffron Walden still had a petrol attendant, he was often asked to check oil level,tyre pressures etc . He was asked to check the tyre pressures on a horse box with a horse inside , all went well until the horse soaked him, he would refuse horsebox owners after that. They still have a pump attendant

I also remember getting a few pence change from a quid buying four gallons of petrol around 1950, Clutch changes years ago were a doddle in very little time. Modern cars are quiet and efficient but most jobs are now a nightmare and the ridiculous exorbitant price of parts is a joke (or not) Any body with time on their hands, figure out how much would it cost to build a so called"prestige" car from scratch

No it was a 2002 so steel subframe, but an amazing amount of clutter to remove to actually get the gearbox!

The first time I was in Ireland, some old Colene had a right go at me for touching her petrol pump. I never did get used to the idea that stopping for petrol involved giving your life history and what ever else you tell them don't let them know that you lived in Neasden for a while because you are bound to have met their cousin / brother / uncle in Biddy Mulligans.
BTW Ireland in the late 80's was just like the East Yorkshire I had grown up in twenty years before, for which I loved it and it's people.
Sadly the last time I visited in 2008 it had changed beyond all recognition.

My mate found an easier way, he had on old blue 1390 Minx, the body fell apart, but it had test on. He was offered another in black with little or no test but reasonable in the body. Swap number plates & job done, he ran it for several years & never got questioned, although he did get asked by plod one day, ”this used to be blue” “just painted it Officer”

During the 80's I had around 12 bikes all off/on road, Trials,trail . Enduro and sidecar trail of various capacities all of which were Honda based specials all on the same number . One evening a friend of the wifes came with her husband for a cuppa . he wandered into my workshop and after a few moments said " I can see 12 bikes all on the same no. " I can only ride them one at a time" I replied " Do me a favour and tax another one" . 40 years later I still have the original No on one of my bikes but dont ask me what happened to the paperwork .

Mrs A used to fill her Morris Minor up at a little garage in Crondall that had a pump attendant, she was very sad when it closed down.

My Grandad had a garage in Weymouth, as a small boy I used to dispense the Redex, whether the customer wanted it or not! One bloke got very shirty but my uncle Stan, who was the pump attendant, dealt with him, I could only have been 7 or 8.

We had some interesting customers , one woman who would come in in the Bull Nose Morris she had restored, another lady had a 1929 Delarge that when I commented on the dull aluminium bodywork said " Young man , this car is for driving , not polishing! " I was well into my 60s at the time. We also had a vintage Bugatti and other classic cars come in on a regular occasions

Very close, Market Weighton, I had clocked the accent in your videos and did wonder.
I still have my Dad's old house in the village which needs bringing up to date but have not been able to get on with it last year, hope to have it rentable by the Autumn pending no more full on lock downs.
