Many years ago people used flour and water to make a wallpaper paste. Blacklocks used to live on it under the wallpaper leading to severe infestations. I used to put them in an Diana 16 air rifle and fire them, unfortunately I shot one of my class mates in the ear from a close range and as a result the air rifle was confiscated but it gave me great satisfaction when I did it as he was a tell-tale and all my friends couldn't bide him.

When I was married the first time (1983) we lived at 44 Cambridge Road; the radio ham lived in the parallel street, other side of the church (where my parents got married in '63)... Bill Screene I think he was called.
My grandparents lived in Westbury Street (with their outside bog

We used to play with our toy soldiers on the steps of the Sally Army hall.Into the 1970s the fire station on George Street (the building's still there) was unmanned and they would use the old air raid siren to call the firemen in. We used to run alongside them as they legged it through the streets, juggling jacket, helmet and Benny Henny... "You'd better hurry up Mister", we'd suggest... I learned some new words from those guys
If you see the size of the doors on that building you realise how massive fire engines have become!
I remember the Army surplus place, I think... it was on Mandale Road, about opposite where the VW dealer/petrol station is now... buried under the A66. I seem to think there was also one of the branches of Dickens DIY along there before they moved everything down to Portrack in the late 70s. I had a Saturday job in their garden centre for two summers before I left school; £4 a day and free fish'n'chips for lunch! Eventually they jacked it up to £5 a day... but scrapped the lunch

Lucky man TYA, Those places are great, even the smell in the buildings gets you in the mood to,Spend, Spend,Spend, I think I still have a couple of long !" Augers for drilling holes in wood by hand,They are around 18" long with an eye on the end to take a wooden handle for twisting purposes, And a very course toothed hand saw, Remember the guy taking the saw and bending it so that the tip virtually touched the handle so show how good the steel was,

[don't mention long hand turned wood augers it was my job as an an apprentice to drill all the joists with a knackered one of them even in oak 
then knock all holes through walls with a long chisel and chase the walls knock boxes in all for 3 quid a week . id be hard pushed to get out of bed for less than a tenner now 
just remembered I got one given a week ago

I made a VERY long drill bit out of one welded it to a piece of 1/2 rod for drilling though a oak beam to put studding along the length of the wood ( used a 240v drill thought )

I extend my masonary drills by welding a length of half inch rod to them then grind a proper cutting edge on them to drill steel brick and wood

Done the same many times, extending drills, Thats what welding sets are for, Turning two bits of metal into one useful object tool etc.

Taste buds are tingling 8ob, As a young lad (seven or eight) fish and chips here in the north east were 3d chips + 7d for fish, Just figured it out, you could have bought twenty four lots of fish'N'chips for a pound.
