I remember buying petrol at 30 odd pence a gallon but milk was 6p a pint.. my wages 14 quid a fortnight so its all relative really.

I was an apprentice and it was about the going rate for a nationalised industry, I moved onto a student engineer rate fairly quickly and that upped the money a bit as well.
Thing was later as a student engineer I think I was getting something like 100 quid a week and my insurance on my car was just over a months wages, maybe six weeks, I hear that the same job today at network rail pays 28K ( ignoring tax about 2K / month ) people complain about high insurance costs 'today' - to be honest I don't think its changed much.

Yeah, I think house prices have risen exponentially - estate agents seem to think thats a good thing!

I used to collect the monies from my paper round on a Friday evening and after, for 10p, I could get chips, peas and a fritter (battered slice of potato) in a tray to eat whilst walking home.
My first motorbike cost me £25 in 1974 for a 1964 Honda S90 Sport that was always breaking down. Insurance was around £3 a year ! I still have , and use, the Gedore ring spanners (10 x11mm, 12x13mm & 14x15mm) I bought to work on it. They are now 40+ years old and still fit nuts perfectly but are showing signs of the slight textured surface smoothing where my thumb holds them

My first motorcycle (as I was banned from having one before by Mother) was in 1977 a Honda C90 in nappy content brown. Just over £300 new, on the road. Registered TFH 77R. That bike had a digital throttle and would do 55MPH pushed and 90MPG.
It recall coming home from a night shift in winter, flying along with the throttle in its ON position and overtaking an Escort in a 40 limit. A water main had burst leaving a frozen surface to the road and I hit it at 15MPH over the speed limit. Off I came and I still remember the sparks coming from the brake lever as it was efficiently ground into a stump. Once I came to a halt a way down the road, the car driver got out and came up to me. As he did so, he unzipped his jacket... to reveal a blue shirt and black tie. ;-) luckily he decided that NFA was required.

I think things are a little different now on the housing side of things, youngsters rightly or wrongly expect to walk into a house that has everything done. This comes at a premium and is a far cry from the sort of properties my age group considered a first time buy, my first house was a basic shell with services laid on and nothing else. There was barely any plaster on the walls , basic wiring and plumbing , no heating or double glazing and certainly no carpets or furniture. It was a few years of slog before it could be considered a home, for the most part it was work in progress which meant a full time job to pay for things and then come home to another shift.

For the new semi bungalow I bought in 1976 at 18 I had a deck chair as main seating ! £2 bought a gas powered fridge. Cooker, washer with mangle, well worn carpet, tatty settee and wobbly coffee table were saved from the tip when a friends grandmother went into a nursing home and her house had to be cleared. The cooker had a gas pipe with what I can describe as a blow gun you'd use with a compressor on the side. You used it to light the other burners, grill and oven from the flame on a lit burner. Camping equipment, which I'd already got, was all we had as cooking pots, pans, cutlery, plates etc. No central heating and just a gas fire to warm the whole place. As wedding present in laws bought us MFI wardrobes (which we still have !) and my father bought me a bed. TV was a B&W that was somebodies cast off and just the three channels - not even Channel 4 broadcasting back then.

just refurbished a bungalow for daughter .it took 7 month to complete nearly every night and weekend and its now a palace . wifey is jealous of it

lol did the rewire and materials for it free and scrounged a lot of materials and got the rest trade price. a complete refurb for 10 grandDone at the usual family rates - FOC?

Just so You'all don't think the States are extremely better off than You over there. We bought lumber and supplies,plywood etc. and stored them in FIL's barn. Bought blocks each payday and stacked Them up on an acre of land He gave Us. Paid Someone to frame up the house and I learned how to do roofing. Everything out here I have hauled Myself with the exception of the roof trusses, furnace(unused total wood heat), the cement used for floors, and the water well plumbing. I made the driveway with 30 some loads of defective blocks from a block plant, which I broke up and used for a base. Had an Electrician put in the Main service and showed Me how to do the rest. Never had a house payment, never in debt more than about $8000, back then for 2 cars. That's changed now. Moved into the house at the end of October 1979. Could lay in bed and see every corner of the house, no walls finished yet. Kitchen sink was in the basement. First well was not very good and Wifey trucked laundry into town for about 15 years. Bad thing is I added a screened in back porch with a comfortable shop underneath and porch has stood about 20 years unfinished, which I get reminded about every 6 months. That's saving up to buy bootstraps to pull Yourself up with.
