So,after some 30yrs mines dues for the dump,you've serve me well but its bye bye
Right then,does one stick to the old metal bucket as i've grown to use or whats these new tuff as **** polyplastic whatever,ones like?
Remember,its to carry everything known to mankind(even the shopping from car to back door),have concrete etc knocked up in it,oh and to be thrown around and live outside for 1000's of yrs to come
Pneumatic wheel is a must

Chiltonsor Chilterns are a decent brand. To be honest most of the ones stocked by Wynnstay (agricultural merchants all over the country) tend to be pretty robust. I personally don't rate the modern stuff as a general "builders" barrow.

I'd also seriously consider your view on pneumatic tyres, I've swapped all of ours to solid tyres and wouldn't swap back.

Site Blazer. The frame has a 2 year guarantee. Tyre is pneumatic but puncture-proof. These things last years even under the club-handed treatment they get on demo sites.

They do a lighter duty one but we only use the heavy duty ones which are about £300ish

Solid wheels dont bump up over rough surfaces or kerbs like air filled

i just go a bog standared wheelbarrow thats metal theres no way im going to use plastic as it wont last years

cost for them about 20.00+ but worth it for a builders wheelbarrow

Ours are all plastic bin type now. Metal ones last 2-3 weeks we have at least one plastic bin one that was new in 2018.

I got supplied with a plastic barrow a couple months ago for doing some digging, and as much as I don't really want to admit it, it seems to be surviving far better than any standard metal barrow I've used previously.

We moved a big rock that took 3 of us to roll into the barrow, and I expected the plastic to give way, the barrow to fold in half and/or the solid wheel to collapse, but although the plastic deformed under load, it sprung back to shape once the rock was removed. We've previously reshaped and written of metal barrows trying to move similar.

Can't use the plastic one as a welding/cutting bench.....
Nor load hot ashes when cleaning up after a fire.
So some plus's & minus's all around.

Why don't any of them come with a simple hand brake for when decending
or trying to dump a very heavy load ?

The galv steel two wheeled muck barrow is magic you have more control and it can move more than a brickies barrow load with ease , the solid rubber or softer neoprene rigid tyres are fantastic no more punctures or degraded tyres.
I retired my two wheeler after 18 years , having repaired the axle at 12 yrs or so old with large steel washers , grease and 1mm all thread rod & two Nylock nuts after the wheel retaining caps rusted away at the steel clips side.

The plastic single wheeled barrows & plastic tubbed two wheeled muck barrows suffer from plastic suffering from oxygen degrading and hot sun , my first plastic tubbed single wheel one cracked with a load of load of concrete in it . .

The softer yellow sturdy neoprene foam tyred ones are fantastic wheels

Check the builders forums, there is only one option, the Belle.

Recent best barrow post on FB group was just over a hundred or so replies saying Belle…

Yes I agree, however a hand brake would be simple to add, making them even better.

Nearly ten years ago I got two well-used wheelbarrows, with plastic tub, from the dump. I replaced the wheels with solid tyres (excellent upgrade!) and welded the frame back together on one. They have stayed outside all that time and are still going strong. For really heavy hauling I use a motorised barrow, but these contractors barrows are good.

FWIW I've half a dozen wheelbarrows. The plastic bodied one is at least 30 years old and is left outside all year round. The plastic is still in excellent condition, a bit faded but showing no signs of UV degradation. The rest are a mix of as cheap as I can find or skip lifts. They've all got puncture proof tyres, as noted above, not as good at going over bumps but better than the tediousness of a flat tyre. The plastic one does the lighter stuff, rocks that can placed in rather than dropped.

I'm not sure of the makes of any of them.

I don't like 2 wheeled wheelbarrows. One wheel hits a bump and it goes sideways, can't tip off the corner and hard to maneuver in tight places plus use more room when not in use..

Make pretty good hop-ups though.
