amongst my many projects ive a beach buggy ive been collecting bits for these include a pair of axles off range rover P38, ive also got a set of wheels for jaguar xj6 based kit car that have come my way, so the question is how tight a tolerance do wheels have to be ?, obviously they waze round at a fair old speed so balance needs to be pretty good, rr pcd is 5 studs on a 120mm circle the jaguar wheels are 5 studs or a 4 3/4" circle which according to my conversion is 5 x 120.6mm tantalizingly close and as its a circle each stud is .3mm out from where it should be , do you think there is a chance they might fit or am i looking at adapter plates which i dont really want as the axles are already wide enough

I do not know the answer, but the presence or absence of a central boss to locate the wheel on the hub might influence the jury's decision.
Without one (i.e. wheel located by studs alone), if you did not do the nuts up evenly, would that exacerbate the problem?

The wheel nuts have a taper on that centres the tapered wheel hole on each stud, and thus the wheel. If there's a discrepancy in the pcd you'll have a job centring the wheel. It could be done, gradually even tightening, but then you'll have your studs angled over a bit. It may be little enough not to matter, but you never know....
Unless you specifically want those Jag wheels I just wouldn't bother it will never be right. P38 is the same pattern as Discovery 2 as far as I remember and those wheels can be bought for pennies. My my eldest just bought a set of 5 with usable tyres for £35. One of his mates got a set totally free at the Malvern LR parts show because the chap didn't want to take them home.

Don't know if the Jag wheel has the same dia boss, in the Land Rover world, you can interchange wheels across models with the same PCD but the boss dia does vary and there are spacer rings available to centre the wheels on the hub.
The wheel nuts are there just to clamp the wheels to the hubs
As the wheel nuts aren't tapered then you might get away with the 0.3mm difference as long as you use a spacer ring to centralise the wheels on the hub

PCD is the same on L322, D3 and 4 as well, hub bore can vary though
bmw wheels are 5x120 arnt they ? so thats the exact same situation but in reverse ?

What size lathe do you need to machine the centre of a wheel? What is the thickness of material surrounding the hole - steel ones are usually pressed?
What size lathe would you need to put a hub into and machine the axle boss smaller?

I think some of the vw transporter/amarok wheels are the same size as some of the land rovers as well.

Yes, but you will be bending the studs, some more than others. This is an age old issue with reliant axles (4 inch) and modern 100mm wheels - granted a lot more spindly studs, but the number of broken ones and errant wheels is frightening. TBH it makes me uneasy.
if you can go up in stud size resizing the pcd would be a good answer.
Wobble nuts with a steel centre would probably work, but I've no experience.

Do they make ones of negative thickness that cater for the issue he describes, with the hub being bigger than the hole?
well the rears are 15" diameter and 12" wide but they are a halibrad 2 piece design so they will unbolt to a smaller section, i think i would take them down to my local engineering firm where they have a fancy cnc milling machine, ive seen wheels being modified in there before, but i think i will investigate the possibility of removing the hubs and having them machined and re drilled at the correct pcd
Magic spacers?
i found this pic on ebay of one of the hubs, using a tape measure the hub centre looks less than a mm to big to go into the wheel so that wouldent be to difficult to machine down leaving plenty of material and there is plenty of room between the studs to machine 5 new holes at the correct pcd that way i dont have to mess with the wheels
