One handled welding with a fresh 450mm rod is great. You never need to weave. How the heck anyone can use a hand held shield in this day and age is beyond me... even the thought of it boils my ****. Learning to weld as a teenager with a Bantam oilcooled we called "shocky" and a friggin hand held mask you couldn't see out of... no wonder we hated stick welding, could never get anything beyond pigeon poo!
The FIRST rule of welding is, get comfortable. How can you get comfortable when you're holding a wobbly stinger in one hand and a stupid medieval shield with the other?
I started to build a pancake for doing the quarry gear but lost momentum. How the heck anyone can use a hand held shield in this day and age is beyond me... even the thought of it boils my ****. The only time they should ever come into play is in extremely limited tight spaces where you can't fit a head shield!
I prefer an ADF but I'm happy enough with a fixed shade flip-down.
Does anyone use pancake hoods in the UK? They look quite useful for welding upside down in broad daylight...
