What training are you doing in 2017?

Going to be learning how to maintain a shiny new 40Mw biomass power station when I start my new job at the end of the month......more training than I can shake a stick at...............that stick will eventually/hopefully find its self creating a few watts of power

The academics will always say HNC and HND are not the same standard but HND is no higher its just a full time course

Mine isn't - HNC is 18 months part time, HND is another 18 months part time. At the end of HNC I get the option to immediately start the HND to "save" 6 months.

...what im talking about is life in the real world where any employer will take some some one with an HNC first and we are paying a serious salary for the role, please PM me for details if your interested. I will not discuss details on here.

Perhaps things have changed from back in 1995 when I returned to "education" I had done a 5 year apprenticeship with City and Guilds, I then had to do a 2 year ONC which I had to have an interview for before being offered a place, a further 2 years for the HNC
all done day release. Higher qualifications in our role are not considered to be an advantage over experience, we would take the more experienced over the more qualified in 99% of situations.

I don't believe it has changed as recently as 95, I think it has been as it is for quite some time, but I could be wrong. HNC was and is a 1 year full time study qualification, HND is and was a 2 year full time study qualification. For example, many years ago I was accepted onto the HNC Aeronautical engineering course. After completing it I was accepted onto the HND Aeronautical engineering course and could have then gone onto the degree, that is the order in which they progress.
I'm not trying to throw titles around here, but my old man was deputy director of the department for continuing education at Aberdeen uni, he has advised a good few student and prospective students in his time (including myself and other family members),I suspect he had a pretty good idea what he was talking about.

Down here in Yorkshire and on Teeside where I did my 1st and only year of the degree before I left the company ONC was 2 years day release OND was 2 years full time HNC was 2 years day release and HND was 2 years full time, I did the 2 years, 1 day and another evening for the ONC at Scarborough Technical College and the same at York for the HNC as Scarborough did not offer such a course.

We accept NVQ's as an Alternative from memory I believe its level 5/6 not sure. I believe NVQ's are more work based hands on than academic having spoken with several apprentices on the subject but those looking to get further still have their eyes set on HNC the standard joke used to be amongst the lecturers was OND and HND students either couldnt hold a job down of failed to gain a place at Uni.....

I've not done any undergraduate studies in the UK but in Oz the entry level engineering qualification started at a HND (there was no such thing as a HNC), then a bachelor of engineering technology and then a bachelor of engineering. A HND at a uni was the first 2 years of the bachelor of engineering technology. The content wasn't the same as a engineering degree course, it was similar subjects pretty much minus calculus (except for the pure maths subject) is my understanding. You would get credits I believe if you did the HND or Eng tech towards the engineering degree but not like for like, if you did them at a college rather than a uni you would get less credits. In Oz certain employers like guys with a trade and a degree but the difference between here and Oz is that you can't call yourself an engineer in Oz unless you have a degree, a HND or Eng tech is a technician qualification. You can do all of the above full or part time these days.

One thing I would say though Simon is it isn't appropriate in my opinion to undermine or belittle other folks qualifications or how they go about achieving them. I would encourage anyone to further their education whether that's full time or part time has no bearing on it in my mind, it demonstrates you have a certain level of knowledge and ability to learn and understand to that level.

But with luck I should get on the lighting conductor course.

I used to work for a national firm in the fire and security industry and all the guys hated doing the appliance testing. They used to take the fluke teser by the lead and swing it around for a bit which used to loosen the mains lead from the terminals without opening it up, then it got sent back to be fixed which took a few weeks!
They subbed it out eventually, it was as boring as..........

If you consider your post, the part I have highlighted in bold should tell you all you need to know. The HNC can be done in 2 years on day release whereas the HND required full time study.

If you look here http://www.sqa.org.uk/files_ccc/HN_review_background.pdf you will see that a review of them was conducted in 1995 however they were in existence before that and the HND was the higher level.

I suspect someone saying an HNC student can hold down a job better than and HND student probably doesn't have a clue what they are talking about. But thats just my opinion, and doesn't have anything to do with the fact I did an HND, it didn't help me with my current career, I don't even have it on my CV.

As my wheel builder/wheel supplier has recently disappeared off the face of the earth I shall be attending a wheel building course in a few weeks time. I have always bought in wheels to spec for my Cargo bikes, trikes & quads, Husky racing rigs, pony carts, pedal racing cars, wheel hoes and pedal powered tool carriers, etc. but now I see it as an advantage to be able to build a wheel whenever I need one rather than relying on bought in all the time.

Just to add my two penn'orth, My HND was a 4 year thick sandwich; six month's study and then six months in industry each year. It is not much below degree standard, at least it wasn't in the early 1970s.
