what size torch?

so, i dont like the torch on new mig...used it earlier in anger to weld a socket to a locking wheel nut to remove it without the key and the length and angle of the neck is just badly designed...its longer and straighter than any other torch ive used before which means its harder to use your spare hand to prop against, and you have to bend your wrist in weird ways to get the correct torch angle into the joint.

its a euro torch though, although has a fly lead hanging out for changing polarity but that a simple addition to any euro torch connector.

250 amp mig, would you go for a 15 size torch (same as the supplied torch) under the notion that anything needing more than 160 amps is going to get stick welded anyway, or buy a 24/25 size torch knowing it cant ake all the welder has?

i would say i could keep the original torch incase i ever needed to get in somewhere tight...but ive got a stubby gas lense kit on a flex head tig torch that would be better than a mig torch for that anyway so id probably en up using the tig over the mig.

my worry is, that ive only ever ha migs that will wel 3-4mm steel, so above that i have ha to use the stick weler, but now i have 250 amps i can see me using it flat out every chance i get as its just easier and cleaner.

4 meters would do me for everything I need...I've swapped the short ground clamp for a longer time I had and the MMA stinger is a longer spare from another machine now too...

I'll get a 25 ordered. Moat of what I weld is 2-3mm but I have been known to use some 5mm wall box for things and occasionally 10mm plate although that would probably still get done with the stick

Personally I would get a size 25 torch but I only stick weld if I absolutely have to so would be making use of the mig for thicker stuff. A binzel mb evo has a 60% duty cycle at 150A, a 250 amp mig probably has a 100% duty cycle at 150amps so not a good match imo.

I think the duty on my mig is 100% at 165 (claimed) and the 15 it came with gets hot quick above 180...

I've ordered a 4 meter 25 size torch with a pack of consumables as well, I will keep the 15 as a spare I think, will just wrap it up and hang it on the side of the cart with the stingers and spare ground clamps

I have a 36 on my bigger welder and it's really good... but a bit heavy/stiff for smaller stuff

A 36 would be overkill for my mig, realistically I never do longer runs that about 60mm usually, nothing I make is any more structural than having to hold 1 specific thing and unusually design it so the joints aren't critical anyway. A 36 would be handy if I was always running flat out though
