what rods to use?

Hi there,

Very new to these forums as you can see and also new enough to welding.
I have been using a MIG before but now I'm looking to pick up an arc welder and the first job for it is very specific and I was hoping to get some help with what rod to use.

I have already had a look at http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/wiki/Electrode_Reference_Chart but unfortunately I'm not able to make a decision from that alone

I am going to weld beadlocks on to rims. The rims are high quality steel rims, about 2mm thick. The beadlock is a mild steel plate, 8mm thick.

I'm fortunate in that I will have great access to everything and all surfaces will be properly prepared.

So, panel of experts. Where should I start? What would be a suggested rod for the job?

This is what the job would look like

How do that translate into something like 6013?
Sorry, tried to google the numbers but I could only find tig rods

For Mig or TIG, I think he referred to ER70S-2 or ER70S-6.

Probably the closest stick rods would be 7018

Ok, perfect. And from what I gather 2.5mm rods should be about right too.

I think you'll find it very tricky to do this with arc, 2mm steel to 8mm steel, and not blow holes in the 2mm, especially as this is your first arc job.

At least practice on pieces the same thickness which don't matter before trying the real thing.

Dan, i would get someone with a mig or tig to do this if u have never used stick before espichally on 7018s u will find it hard welding 8mm thick to 2mm with a stick welder as it will want to melt the 2mm and not tie into the 8mm if the welds are bad and not air tight u will just have a pain in the **** with leaks

Yea Ciaran, I think you're right. will get a pro to do it with a mig.

Got a bit carried away thinking I'd be able to do it myself, when the only tool you have is a hammer and all of that...
