I drive excavators for a living , working away all week , most of this year iv been working on the foundations of the new fourth bridge and im working 84hrs a week 3 weeks on 1 week off

I did a stint as standby safety boat skipper while BP were installing gas recovery subsea pipeline at Hound Point. Those E, NE winds running through the Forth were bone chilling!

Yes , iv been working tides so have felt the cold winds over the last few weeks , i just turn the heater up a bit more though , only time i get cold is when i go for a cup of tea or get out to grease the machine
One of our retired drivers dug up a 500lb bomb on the olympics site , it was underwater and he was bashing it and scratching it with the bucket before it came free

Now working at the Co. I did my apprenticeship at from '70-75 - third time back!
Worked for a coal mining roof support co. for 16 yrs before Mrs T killed off the NCB, then had a go as a self employed will writer (loved it but couldn't make enough money) before going back into engineering doing CAD layouts for press work.
Went back to my present Co. in the Engineering Team (Jig & Tool design and gear design) before leaving to join an (ex) mate as we, and the bank, bought out a small gear manufacturing Co. Our main customer nearly went broke so we went our different ways and I went to work for a pallet racking Co. doing the layouts and installation for warehouses.
Ended up back at square one as the racking Co. were bought out, it was obvious that they would be closed down, so made a few phone calls and ended up in the Service Department project managing repair and overhaul of Allen gears and other manufacturers gears.
Its a funny old world

Reasonable for the amount of labour in them.
Ones for the A series out next year, got a massive list of ones to make patterns for.

After many years spent either on site or in a number of very drafty workshops freezing / baking my bits off (delete as necessary dependent on time of year) fab'ing and welding everything from structural steelwork to racing car chassis's and suspension parts I now sit in a centrally heated office answering the telephone selling motorcycle parts - with a 6 month break, somewhere in the middle, to have a go at doing SAP calculations for new build houses.

I'm a OEM motor mechanic working for Jaguar Landrover pay is good when you include shift allowance for 3 shifts, and when there is a new model launch there is as much overtime as you can handle. But there is a fair amount of pressure when there is nearly 6000 cars awaiting repair

me used to run a taxi co till ill health made me pack up
original trade mechanic then went onto driving HGVs now LGVs then owner driver with 3 artic units in the 80s (that's when diesel was 30pence a litre)
running UK and Europe not much money in haulage now worked in
South Africa for a bit workshop manager for haulage co basicly an **** kicker then back to uk on the spanners or driving then the taxi co
so been about a fair bit

We have a large hpper barge to load ill get a pic tomorrow if you like , we should be loading the last of the spoil from the dig , well til after exmas as it will probably have another metre in by then , the muppets that are running this job cant get it into thier heads that if you dig a hole underwater it fills back up with the tides coming an and going out , not to mention the silt you already have outside the dig

Maintenance engineer electrical and mechanical on very high power transmitter equipment. I also fit and repair aluminum tube transport device avoidance lights as there drivers think they own the sky on very tall masts >700ft!

How do you get into the mast cimbing game? There's a large 1000ft + mast a few miles form me and I see them going up that every now and again for maintenance, often wondered how you'd get a job like that? (I do a lot of climbing in my spare time).

I work for a music video production company which get's me all over the place but unfortunately doesn't provide full time work so when I'm not doing that I work as a sparky/mechanic/handy man/climbing instructor.

The big boys in the game are Babcock, Balfour and Arqiva. It's very interesting work so might be worth a few phone calls etc. there is a bit of a slow down in wireless services as the digital switch over is finished and very little mobile expansion but overhead lines work is big at the moment due to grid works

Y'see, that there is a proper job. OK so you work long and hard but you can see what you've contributed to and feel like you've done a day's work - and probably see proper money for it too.

And if the boat engine breaks you can always paddle it back to shore using the bucket

You can go and do a 2 week course , it can take years to be good at it though

I fix them, after the drivers have had a few years to get good at breaking them.
