I recently closed my 2nd hand book business and became semi-retired (I'm 40!).
I collect (!) tools and engineering books.

I do a bit of welding, fabrication, metal casting, sheet metalwork and joinery/cabinetmaking as and when I feel like it - just as a hobby.
I sell most of the stuff I make so I don't run out of room although I am still registered self-employed, and it all goes through the books (!)

Forensics for the police. 35 hour week. Welding and learning about metal working, tool shop engineering etc are my therapy after a week of dealing with death violence and criminality!

my first time yesterday in London for a very long time, travelled in on a coach so I can understand why you hate it! This was in relation to my job as a micro brewer lobbying parliament to get rid of the beer duty escalator.

Im in the IT game myself, been over 10 years now and looking to move on or be moved on at the mo from my very 'cooperative' employers.

Part of the IT team mainly looking after the banking system databases with thousand of accounts and billions of pounds but unfortunately the responsibility doesn't pan out in the wages, even when I am the deputy IT manager and have assumed loads more responsibility in the past 18 months for no extra money.

The phrase that the management throw around is 'More for less' so they expect more work from us for the same money and with less staff due to redundancies.

To be honest I would be quite happy for the redundancy payout as it would be 1 years salary and I can ****** off and run my dads post office for a while where there is no red tape and no mgmt to speak of.

Look after all the EMEA sites for the Foodservice side of the business - infrastructure, networks, servers, end user support team, everything except the ERP / Finance stuff.

I work in a motor factors (only two days a week at the moment because of health problems earlier in the year )
I was a car mechanic for five years then a bus mechanic for twenty one years.
I then had a few years working with bouncy castles and other inflatables

Now working at the Co. I did my apprenticeship at from '70-75 - third time back!
Worked for a coal mining roof support co. for 16 yrs before Mrs T killed off the NCB, then had a go as a self employed will writer (loved it but couldn't make enough money) before going back into engineering doing CAD layouts for press work.
Went back to my present Co. in the Engineering Team (Jig & Tool design and gear design) before leaving to join an (ex) mate as we, and the bank, bought out a small gear manufacturing Co. Our main customer nearly went broke so we went our different ways and I went to work for a pallet racking Co. doing the layouts and installation for warehouses.
Ended up back at square one as the racking Co. were bought out, it was obvious that they would be closed down, so made a few phone calls and ended up in the Service Department project managing repair and overhaul of Allen gears and other manufacturers gears.
Its a funny old world

C&G old style vehicle mechanic and also E&G old style moteor vehicle electrician. moved up a few rungs managed 90 guys on a mixed repair workshop .


got injured at work quite badly & had to start again aged 30 Had a dificult time till I took a years full time city & guilds in industrial electronic testing & servicing eventually did HND electrical engineer but never bothered with the exams as I worked for myself .


Trying to be self employed with only one arm fully working was difficult to say the least so I joined BT playing SB's in computer suites till one day the chair I was sitting on collapsed & bustg my spine .. result .... now 85 % disabled apparently .
I took adverse reactions to various medications which have made me somewhat dyslexic especially when pain levels are high in the day .

I am now a filler of forms for Her Majesty The Queen and have a minor part internet based business trickling a few tokens in to a bank account 24/7

Full time train driver with one of the big Train operating companies.

Only work a 4 day/35 hour week so got plenty of time to indulge in my hobbies! Coming from living in a rural area surrounded by farms I have, over the last 2 years, been developing my own range of ATV trailers for agricultural and light forestry/woodland management. Also do a wee bit of fabrication/repair on a few farms in the area.

Currently working for a company that make safety equipment and bits for the MOD. I work in the pad printing room which is awesome, quite technical, have to use your head, smells great have a laugh with the other three chaps in there and we have classic rock on all day, LOUD. Only downside is the managers who come in on daily basis to chase orders, moan about performance and talk ******...

Spent a few years as a service engineer where I balanced fans and laser aligned motors, compressors and pumps, also did (still help the boss every so often) repair in situ balancing machines.

I also keep busy doing websites and designing posters for local venues and promoters. I also promote some nights with a couple of mates, load-in the gigs, manage the stages on big events..

In the summer I work at a few festivals in the VIP camp sites where I build very expensive sheds for people to sleep in.

I'm a service engineer for a cherry picker and magic carpet hire firm, handed my notice in at the begining of December. Moving from a large multi-national company to a small hire company where the man on the other side of the desk pays all the bills. Hopefully becoming a valued member of staff rather than just a payroll number.

Um, my job title is Field Service Engineer. Ignoring the fact that I'm not an Engineer (though I am a C&G qualified car mechanic) my primary role is the repair, service, calibration and installation of industrial x-ray systems.
However, there isn't enough work to keep me occupied fuill-time doing that so I also (just a sample from 2012):

Inspect petrochemical pipelines with long-range ultrasonic kit
Trace, clean and decommission pipelines and infrastructure for the MOD
Design, fabricate, assemble and commission Irradiation systems for medical research (including training medical students how to use the kit). Clients include leading Universities and pharmaceutical companies.
Ditto dye penetrant lines, lead-lined sliding doors for x-ray bays, tank floor scanner trolleys etc. etc.
Refurbish second-hand Mag Particle Inspection benches
Design, assemble, install and commission radiation warning and interlock systems (clients include the MOD and Saudi Aramco)
Produce CAD drawings for most of the above, as well as writing the operation manuals and programming PLCs.
'Any other duties' - drive the forklift, cherry-picker, delivery van. Don't make tea though!

For all this I get paid a whopping... let's just say 'less than 25 grand'

I'm a OEM motor mechanic working for Jaguar Landrover pay is good when you include shift allowance for 3 shifts, and when there is a new model launch there is as much overtime as you can handle. But there is a fair amount of pressure when there is nearly 6000 cars awaiting repair

Can you explain,why is it, regardless who digs up a road they very very rarely manage to repair without a height difference?....They need to test repairs on a skateboard ,or a golf with very little suspension

I do car restoration. at the moment i am doing a 1974 Lancia Fulvia. which must of been looked after as it still had all the original panels on it and its floor.
