I have a Welding and Fabrication Limited Company, working under contract for various companies, Also have a welder/fab recruitment agency that Mrs engineer runs. so beer tokens from two sources

Um, my job title is Field Service Engineer. Ignoring the fact that I'm not an Engineer (though I am a C&G qualified car mechanic) my primary role is the repair, service, calibration and installation of industrial x-ray systems.
However, there isn't enough work to keep me occupied fuill-time doing that so I also (just a sample from 2012):
Inspect petrochemical pipelines with long-range ultrasonic kit
Trace, clean and decommission pipelines and infrastructure for the MOD
Design, fabricate, assemble and commission Irradiation systems for medical research (including training medical students how to use the kit). Clients include leading Universities and pharmaceutical companies.
Ditto dye penetrant lines, lead-lined sliding doors for x-ray bays, tank floor scanner trolleys etc. etc.
Refurbish second-hand Mag Particle Inspection benches
Design, assemble, install and commission radiation warning and interlock systems (clients include the MOD and Saudi Aramco)
Produce CAD drawings for most of the above, as well as writing the operation manuals and programming PLCs.
'Any other duties' - drive the forklift, cherry-picker, delivery van. Don't make tea though!
For all this I get paid a whopping... let's just say 'less than 25 grand'

How does the whole limited thing work out for you?
I am electrical mechanical maintenance craftsman. I work for fords in body construction at the southampton transit assembly plant. Well at least for the time being. Just wondering what everyone else does, as I have no idea of what the next move might be.

Works OK, as i do 2 different things , but get advise from your accountant first, don't rush into anything.

If I'm stuck in the office, 9 to 5 with an hour for lunch
so 35 hours, effectively, though I can't recall the last time I actually did 9 to 5. Out in the field, as long as it takes (we might do 0800 till 1830 on a pipe job with 30 mins lunch but possibly a couple of coffee breaks if the weather's bad) - but no overtime paid unless prior agreement and the customer is paying for it.
I might do a breakdown callout 200 miles away that could entail 6 hours driving and three hours on-site, no extra for that either.
Or I could sit in a pass office for 5 hours as has happened before now...
I could quite happily take a 20% pay cut and only work 4 days a week but they weren't too keen when I suggested it

Does Ford still dish out the Q1 prestige quality flag to their suppliers? I remember the managerial despondancy when they lost the Q1 flag at a company I worked for back in 89/90. The trucks were sat in the car park with curtainsides open waiting for parts and an aircraft waiting on the tarmac as the Genk (Fiesta?) production line was closed down as we couldn't produce the parts to the correct standard. All the financial losses for that had to be paid for under the contract and guess who didn't get a payrise that year? Not the management!
Writing sas and sql code for people who dont appreciate its complexities or subtle genius.

Avoiding talking to people. E.g. yesterday the bloke who sits opposite attempted to engage me in conversation withe opening gambit "Ive just bought the x factor winners song. Would you like a listen?" He was roundly ignored.

I'm also a welder fabricator limited company. I have contracts with two machine hire firms and also build/convert commercial vehicles. I carry out lots of other welding work and bespoke designs and I also teach basic welding and fabrication to school leavers at a local college. Also when work gets quiet I work as a freelance NVQ Assessor.
My hours our generally no less than 40-50 hrs but can easily creep up when I'm busy. I love it and wouldn't change a thing

The cook/housekeeper has been here for 18 months, and I pay her £150 per week plus free room and board. Then there's the half-wit. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about £10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of whisky every Saturday night. He also sleeps with my wife occasionally.'

I work full time as a metal sculptor, and cant believe that I can make living making 'nice things'.
A little hobby that got out of control and took over. I was helped into self employment by a nasty bullying boss and bunch of similarly minded colleagues.

I'm an IT engineer, if you ask anyone who works for the same company they'll say I'm the IT manager - although according to my contract and salary I'm an engineer
Basically I look after 110 pc's and 6 servers spread over 4 offices, also anything that has a plug on it and anything that is near a pc is my remit, including moving desks etc.

I am self employed and work with audio visual systems, any thing from project management, system design, programming control systems, and on site install / problem solving. The summer was manic thanks to every man and his dog wanting to view or otherwise monitor the games, though I did not go to any of the venues.
I would hate to do a 9-5 again sitting in the same office all day, I did that for a few years flogging paper, film and chemistry to the London photography trade. We had some really high profie corporates and well know 'celeb' clients but that world changed for ever with the acceptance of digital.

work in a shop, supervising the evening team who fill shelves. hate it! job its self isnt too bad, and enjoy working with my team. its all the managers who are up the regional managers **** who are up the regional managers **** who are........ you get the picture. The thing that really ****** me off is these are the poeple who get £10/15/20k+ bonus for making absoluely stupid decisions and coming up with crackpot ideas without asking anyone who actually has a clue what there on about, namely the poorly paid people that will end up carrying out the crack pot ideas. But i bet its the same story in most companies.

Currently on long term sick/retirement with me/cfs from my current occupation as web developer/programmer for a very large news/financial research company.
It was all rapid app development and to be delivered yesterday. Not exactly conducive to a healthy life style.
The only work based accreditation ive got is city and guilds motorcycle mechanics.
All the IT web stuff is self taught and hard work. Working my way up through the various IT jobs ive had and a few work paid courses.
Now Im teaching myself to weld as Ive always wanted to try but never got round to it. Spent my whole life learning new skills its hard to stop wanting to learn something new even when I havnt got the energy.
