I'm pretty sure it's not a screwdriver.
I'd guess at some sort of food press, squishing pate or similar down to the correct consistency.

The holes are maybe to bolt something to it. Like a wooden rectangle with short bristles in it for polishing/waxing a floor. The weight of the cast helps it do its job better.

dont know but love old stuff like this, yes worth the clean and save I reckon , maybe an inspection cover for old fire/range

I'll get a wire wheel on it to remove the crud before thinking about dip.
Usually, if you wire wheel anything like this, it does tend to take it to bare metal anyway. Might even reveal a makers mark!

I will go for floor bumper pushed one over miles of floor don't remember what they were made of under the thick felt cover but they were heavy, bit of a write up on them,

I was going to agree with floor bumper but thought no,as they were like steel blocks much heavier and where used for a side to side motion,that looks more forwards backwards
How i know,basic training,Cambrai Barracks, Catterick Garrison. 1980
Punishment with one of those was to hold it by the handle at arms length off the floor while double time on the spot,something i wont forget ever

So the plot thickens?
Anyway, I have cleaned it as far as I could be bothered. It did not turn up anything interesting.
Though surprisingly I did manage to literally unscrew one of the rusted off bolts.
Unsurprisingly the big one did not...
So there it is in it's naked glory. Dunno what it is, dunno what to do with it.
I'm stumped....

The one pictured, which was the 'modern', 'lightweight' version, which could be used in two directions (as indicated by the grooves) and the other which was much heavier and had the handle secured by a bolt and as such could only be used along one plane, giving a much more solid 'click, click' when used.
You could get someone else to stand on them to give added lustre to the floor

It does look like it might even actually be some sort of door stop, it could certainly function as one. Bit heavy though for a private property.
One thing to point out is that the two fixing bolts came up through the bottom of the base with the nuts on top. There is no evidence for anything attached via the four corner holes, they do not look threaded either so are perhaps locating holes for dowels??

Well I couldn't resist going back. The same pile of builders scrap had three spades, one snapped, one bent and then this.
Looks like a solid forging so I am hoping it's decent steel.
Certainly plenty of meat on it and despite appearances, looks relatively undamaged.
It was scrap so I do not feel pressured into turning it back into a spade (I may investigate that). Instead I was struck by a sudden urge to make a hori-hori. I was considering the idea of flattening out a leaf spring but that's a LOT of hard work. I may have a thin enough section but if this spade is a decent steel, it would be perfect with a built in handle ready made.
Anybody know what grade of steel this might be?
