What is the most ruthless, aggressive grinding disc in the world?

I've heard the 3M Cubitron II is pretty good, but do you guys have any other suggestions? I'm wanting to remove my welds from T- joints or better known as 2F welds. What I'm trying to to do is reuse the steel, which in this case is two strips of 8.0'' x 2.0'' x 10g.

Let me see if I can convert that over to metric for you UK boys.

That's 203.2 millimeters by 50.8 millimeters by 3.2 millimeters thick. A simple T-joint for a fillet weld test coupon.

I'm weighing the cost of steel to the cost of abrasives. People don't seem to throw the steel away anymore.

Oh, before I forget, the disc would be for a 4.5'' right angle grinder (114.3mm)

Not quite sure of the best discs to use, but I would suggest you get some decent protective equipment. Obviously safety glasses but also a good set of hearing protection and a decent ffp3 mask. The noise generated when grinding is at a frequency that really damages your hearing, as in tinnitus (I can assure you it's not nice). Also the dust is very fine and it's difficult to get a good mask. You will know if it works as if it doesn't you will see black marks around your nose.

I have found with cutting discs the make is important. Some wear quickly and just cause lots of dust.

A stupid cowboy political attitude won't protect your lungs from dust and weld fume.

Anyway the best abrasive I've came across is 3M cubitron, but honestly i think I'd chuck it out and get fresh steel... What's it worth? $10? Its not just the cost of abrasive vs steel, its your time grinding the welds out...

Amazing to see the black dirty build up on even the cheap face masks after grinding for a half day. I'm now using a 3m half mask a lot more.

Not going to comment on the virus, bar I know too many healthy people laid low long term over the last 2 years after an infection. There's something nasty about.

An old friend of mine was the first person to die of that virus in Southend hospital, two more died of it within months.
As for grinding & not wearing a mask, Copd & Asthma are not nice diseases to get, Two guys i knew have died of them in the last two years, both didnt wear masks., 3M cutting discs are some of the worst i have used, touch them to the work & they evaporate in a cloud of greenish dust!
SAIT planet discs are the best i have found & are excellent.
The most violent discs i ever used were 9" Spiracut 16 grit grinding discs. Brutal things with grooves like a millstone, I used to use them for grinding GRP in big boat repairs & they would take 1/8" off in one pass. lethal things really.

This isn't the government telling you to do this, the decision is yours. Also the issues associated with grinding dust aren't fake, they are very real.it will build up over time and you probably won't notice until you try to do something strenuous.

However, if you don't wear a mask then try to do it outside.

I have cut lots of box section so I can reuse it. I tend to use a thin cutting disk so I can direct the cut where I want to. You will need to cut both the weld and penetration so take that into consideration.

For flattening the weld off I prefare a flap disc, but with the amount of weld you will have to remove then you may be better removing the main part with an aggressive disc then tidy up with a flap disc with a less aggressive grit.

If you want to re-use the steel then you want to take some time and carefully grind off the weld in a controlled approach. An overly aggressive abrasive is pointless.

That is not much weld to remove, I would get in there with any old grinding disc, cut out the bulk of the weld, wiggle the bits until they snap apart and then use a fibre disc to flatten the remainder of the weld back to the base metal.

Shouldn't take too long, no need for any drama. Wear a mask or don't, it's your choice and your lungs, not our problem.
PPE exists for a reason...

You'll not beat the metal removal rate. However you can't beat a cubitron solid wheel for longevity.

Tried a Cubitron copy made in Italy , it's IMA Cermax , not bad at all to grind away the mill scale , but does not last more than normal discs .

I've seen a strange disc watching a FireBall Tool video , it's made in US but pricey , it has some bumps on the surface but I don't remember the brand . Seemed to work good .

Not a chainsaw disc! They are a very bad idea.

I use one of these carving discs, which are essentially a less aggressive version of a circular saw disc and relatively safe if used with care, but only on wood!

Air arc would peel that weld right off, and make for much less grinding.

You don't need to shred the steel to remove it, just get it off the plate.

Make sure you remove the guard and wear next to no ppe ,(already there getting there re the mask ) is that not the usual American way ?
