What is it with angle grinders…?

It was either a small Kango or Hilti grinder (red one) I bought some years back. Killed it virtually out of the box raking out old lime mortar between bricks. Literally it's first outing. Think a dust cloud ignited inside or something.

I’ve used battery ones but that’s like snail mail when you wait for the rechargeing to catch up.

Buy more than one battery and swap them around

Thank god grinders have got more powerfull over the years.

Wolf grinderette. That takes me back I remember my dad buying one when they first came out. It had a white or light grey body with a blue stripe.

Brad mentioned Fein, I had one of their oscillating multi tools, lightly used but a handy thing to have, one day the capacitor exploded as i was using it. Out of warranty so expensive to fix, It did it again so i binned it. Dad had one the same & didnt use it so passed it on to me. A couple of years later that one blew up the same way but gave me an electric shock when it did it. That one went in the bin. I wouldnt buy Fein now after that.

Vote again for Metabo corded 115mm grinder, slim enough for one handed use. I have two of these and whilst not in use all day every day, vibrate a lot less than others inc the Bosch blue and give the impression of going on for ever.

I've had my two Bosch grinders (115mm and 125mm) for years, used and abused, they just keep going. My first Bosch one did 20+ years before it died.
Guess I'm just lucky

I buy the parkside ones when I see them. Although they are undoubtedly cheap **ite, the speed control is a nice touch and they have a pretty much no quibble 3 year warranty.
The longest lasting 4.5" grinder I ever had was a "challenge extreme" one from argos. It lasted over 10 years of hacking at cars and other general welding work. Bought the same model again and that one died pretty fast. Seems to be luck of the draw to some extent. I have noticed that for the first few months the parkside gearboxes get hot so I think they have a kind of running in period where it's best not to let it get too hot, they can then take some abuse.

I have a Nutool 4 1/2" angle grinder that I bought in Makro for £5.00 + vat (17.5% in those days), so £5.88 in total. Nothing fancy and not been abused, but still going after 23 years.

I have a 4 1/2" grinder bought from Makro years back when they were pedalling loads of Nu-Tool. This one however is labelled "BUDGET". Vibrates a good bit more than my favourite Bosch but tbh it's done loads of graft.

The blade stop button thing failed years ago but it keeps going.

Saying that I've loads of "under a tenner" corded and cordless Nu-Tool stuff from Makro, bought on a "rude not to" whim and it mostly all died after one use/charge.

The grinder is still going mind and a circular saw I just use to cut cement board with the original blade.

Yet another hits the dust!! I’m referring to the 4 1/2 inch ones. This time and last its another Makita, 16months from new and a extended warranty that was such a **** to register the website put me in a loop and confused the hell out of me thinking I’ve logged it but nooooo as I found out today!!

That’s two makita, 9 Bosch and many more, all die similar durations. Best one I’ve ever had was a ****ty Netto one that had nine lives!!
Problem is I don’t want a mega powerful one that shakes its head and needs three arms to hold but just a simple thin bodied light one with the stop/start button ergonomically near my thumb for one handed operations to cut thin delicate sheet metal. I’ve come to the conclusion YOU DONT GET what you pay for at times.

A pal who is a little rough on the grinders has managed to brake two of the makita ones each in less than one year.

The one dewalt lasted just under a year and I think it's replacement has lasted about one and a half years so far, although I havent seen it in a while so maybe it has died also..
