The incoming ceramic block has exploded. Does anyone know what it is?
If it’s a booby-trap designed to go pop a month after warranty expires, can I just bypass it?

The bearings on the drum are good, brushes in the motor are worn but have life left, it’s an older machine but was working well so it’s worth trying a quick fix..

A bit hard to see what it is from that pic. Do all three mains wires go into it, or just L and N?

Can you unbolt it and take a closer shot, preferably including any markings?

This is a euro setup (not a UK 13a fused plug), history unknown but lets say decades old not years old.

L&N in + L&N out + 2 earths.


My guess is that the popped bit is a capacitor, thermal fuse, or (likely) combined

I snapped the burnt section off, disconnected the motor (in case it’s shorted), plugged everything back together and I have power on the display.

Do I just need to add a smoothing capacitor across L & N then see what happens?

As suggested, it's a noise suppressor. But it's a plastic housing I believe. You can bypass it, to test, but there is likely to be interference if you don't replace it.
The correct components are designed specifically for their position in the circuit, so don't stick any old capacitor across the mains.

It's just a common-mode filter, the component values are all on the label. I might have a suitable one at work if you don't have any luck elsewhere.

my bench vice

tried to press a steel shaft into an ally housing...must have gotten something wrong with the final dimensions...just about got it started and then the vice jammed up...think the nut has taken the brunt of it...was meant to be a relatively light press fit...

oh well, gives me something else to make

but it's a barrow, any tube vaguely close to the size would work.

A can of tyre puncture spray foam stuff sorts most wheel barrow tyre issues! Or the bright yellow solid wheel…

Before I retired I worked at a little village garage , we were always getting customers coming in asking if we could mend a puncture in their wheel barrow. In the end I was telling them to go to Screwfix just down the road because a new wheel complete with tyre and tube was cheaper than the cost of a new tube and fitting.

Well I found my spare innertubes quite quickly so all sorted.
And they were free so just 20minutes of my time.

The 4" tubes for a sack truck are normally really poor quality and perish in a couple of years. I always keep a couple spare.
Best solution to extend their life is to add oko tyre sealant goo but they will eventually split.
But you can recover the goo from the old tube and use it again.
