I have just realised there are two styles of main boom ram: ones that extend to lift the boom and ones that retract (ram located in front of the boom or behind). The extend ones are the style that would need the internal stop.

On the 2CX above and Kubota mini above, they retract, so the external stop would work. Random google images of mini machines show a mix of the two arrangements so machine choice could make an easy job of this.

You could cobble one inside the cylinder but you'd have to make sure it couldn't slide or it would score the cylinder up.
