What could they have done wrong? 300tdi timing

I’ve had this with an Astra van, supposed to set the cam up with a dti on a special stand

3 attempts it took them, when the first mechanic started telling me it was like that before and nothing to do with the belt I went mental, boss sided with me and in the end I got the job done for the price of the parts

I wouldn't let the local VW change my summer/winter floor mats. My cars in the shop at the moment being repaired after a bump they looked at me stupid when i told them not to wash it.

They think that is a premium part of the service. I had our Discovery 3 in for a tow bar recall/check, I was short on time and as it passed it was a 5-10 job. They brought the car round the front and they had spent time washing it. I know many people would be really pleased but I'm like you and it's not even like I detail my cars.

Weird thing is the fact you get that feeling is exactly the same reason why you'll never have an issue because you are conscious of how important it is

I've never got used to tyres popping on to the rim, I think the fact that at home I have no ambient noise makes it seem even louder.

So, i need to set it to TDC using the notch on the flywheel and the mark,
Then remove the cover plate and see if the locking pin (drill bit) slots in, if it doesnt then rotate it till it does.

I know i should just let them deal with it, but if its that simple then ill just do it myself, itll save me the 70 odd quid in wages ill loose wasting time taking it back.

When the flywheel notch is at 6oclock and the crank Woodruff at 12, then your pin should slide in to the hole on the IP sprocket etc.

If it does not, move the crank very slightly, as it may just be binding, as it's a very tight fit, but, obviously, if you need to properly turn it, that's no good.

For the fine adjustment, (and check this somewhere else too!) you need to set the crank, then loosen the bolts on the IP sprocket locking plate, which allows the IP to rotate a little relative to its sprocket. You only get a little travel, as the holes are just ovaled, but you can get some adjustment.

So, you loosen the plate and rotate the pump, using a socket on the front nut, until the pin slides easily. All with the crank (or more precisely, the flywheel) in the right place.

Then, when the pin moves freely in the pump, you tighten up the locking plate again.

One tip - the locking plate bolts are not always easy, and they are a pig if they do round. Use a 6 point, not a 12 point. Of course, given that they've only just been used, they should be free enough.... : )

To clear up confusion, it is more accurate to set the crank with the flywheel notch than trying to judge when the Woodruff is at 12.

But to seen the flywheel notch, you need to be under the truck with a torch looking through the hole. But the you can't turn the crank.

You can have a friend help you, or you can use the tool in the cheap kit and do it by yourself.

Removing the crank dampener after you've done the bolt is a pig of a job, if there is corrosion on the crank. The cheap kit has then tool to do this. I've done it without, but, only due to issues miles from home, when I did not have the kit.

Removing the IP keeping the timing in place - it's not a job you often have to do, but the 23 quid kit has the part for that too.

I said I had done it (the timing) both with and without the kit. For the cost, I'd use the kit every time. Indeed, I actually have two of them, which has allowed me to swap IPS between engines without loosing timing.

I have 3 300tdis and one international engines 2.8.

Okay so finding the notch on the flywheel is a pita on your own,
But anyway, i thought if i rotate it till the pin does slot into the IP, then if its timed right the notch will be at 6 o clock, it isnt, so its not in the correct place right?

Yes, but...

If it's even very slightly out, you won't see it, so you won't be able to get any idea of how much it is off, if it's off at all.

Also be aware that the crank does two rotations for one on the IP. So don't just line up the IP - use the Woodruff for guidance. I'm sure you would have anyhow, but it's worth mentioning in case.

Ive found the notch, the pin doesnt fit in the pump, but only just off so ill adjust it till it does and hope for the best

Hell of a lot less 'tappy' now, ill take it for a test drive now

Ok so in conclusion, acceleration is back, still sounds a little different from before but that could just be in my head.

Probably used an undersized pin which has allowed some movement on the pump when lining up
