What conduit for 16a socket

Sorry - I’ve googled the heck out of this and can’t figure it out and am trying to avoid multiple trips to Screwfix. I need to fit a single 16a socket in my workshop. It’s an old barn currently with metal 13a sockets and galvanised conduit.

I need to run a new cable from the rcd and drop from ceiling height to workbench height and can’t figure out what sort of conduit / fittings I need to connect to something like this: https://www.screwfix.com/p/mk-16a-2...l4_SMPX3lPCAwIsj3XQaArt8EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Any suggestions?

Thanks - that helps. Only 2 options, right - 20mm or 25mm? Found a data sheet for the MK one which references 20mm for 16a and 25mm for 32a.

you will get 16a in 20mm conduit.

20mm will be fine, when you start cramming more In you need to consider derating but one 16a circuit won't be an issue


So you will need
conduit 20mm
Saddle clips
20mm bush female male

use plastic conduit drops and fittings .pointless using metal unless you intend it getting hit with metal and forklift trucks etc

Most 16A surface sockets will either have a female 20mm conduit thread or else will just be a plain sided box that you can drill whatever size hole you need in.

So if using plastic conduit allow for a male thread adaptor at that end and it will work for either option.

If using steel conduit you will either be able to thread the conduit straight in to it or will need a Bush and coupler (or two lockrings and a female Bush if you prefer)

Not got a 16A 230V socket to hand, just this 110V one. Principles the same. I've put a long, M20 bush in below. Probably won't get those at SF/TS:

You could put an M20 nipple into the plastic and come off that with a coupler to your tube.

Why add the nipple and coupler when you can screw the socket directly onto the conduit?

So you can get the tubes on the wall whilst you wait for the sockets usually!

Plus I just think it looks better with a coupler.

What dia cable are you using & will it be a single run from the meter to the socket or a ring circuit? Reason I'm asking is that if you are using 2.5mm t&e you will just about get a double run down 20mm conduit but only a single run of 6mm.

I would also advise fitting an isolator with the socket, otherwise when you lock up at night you will have to unplug whatever is in the 16a socket to isolate the machine. (I find its good practice to switch off all equipment at the socket before leaving)

Single run of 2.5mm. It’s only a few metres from the RCD and will be dedicated supply. Good point on isolator - thanks

That's what I recently fitted with plastic conduit down to it. Yes I have been careful when adding stuff to the tool board

Just a point worth noting.

You said it is an old barn - depending on how old the electrical installation is you may want to double check the conduit is actually metric, it may be the old imperial.

Cheers - barn is old but wiring not so. This will be a new, dedicated supply run so I can use whatever I like. It's only the drop from ceiling to socket position I need conduit for so nothing else to tie into.

thats posh you could have used the mcb as isolators as the sockets are next to the db
