It seems that Jaguar didn't learn from BMW's mistakes.

This is a bang up to date Ingenium diesel from a 4 year old Jaguar XE, and yes, timing chain/tensioners worn to the extent that it has jumped a couple of teeth. And it's an interference engine so game over and not uncommon unfortunately.

Shocking.

It is. As you can see the timing chains are at the back of the engine so even if you do try to pre-empt a failure (apparently there is a fix) it will cost you £1500 or so, and that's at an independent. I suspect main dealers would double that.

we used to borrow tools from the local dealer to either copy or decide if they were really needed, I made my own for all the petrol engines, usually overnight so we could return the dealer tools next day......

Our local BMW franchise dealers hardly want to sell us "indies" parts let alone lend us tools

Other make/marque franchises in the town are nothing but helpful

We had several around us, one had poached two parts guys from me, two others poached three mechanics between them so I had a way in! plus I was spending a few grand a week, and some of my home made tools were better than the appoved ones, especially the 10 ton ram I welded to a steel wheel to remove rear drive shafts, they borrowed that from me quite a few times.... but officially they were not allowed to help me! In Germany the area BMW rep took me out for dinner, I collected parts from a German dealer monthly, in the 90's I used a 13 ton Merc with a sleeper cab for the German trip,
