What are my options for fitting a new bearing on the shaft of my old `Skil` jig saw? (Pics)

Although this saw was sold under the Wicks brand, my understanding is that it was made by Skil. It is quite old…1992, but has been a good little saw. It is a 6 speed 520w saw with pendulum action.

I am wanting to fit a new bearing on the shaft as the original is now foobared. I would imagine that one or two tools are needed-such as a puller to remove, and something to press the new bearing on?

Not something I am likely to do more than once. Other than the satisfaction of accomplishing the job myself, I guess it would make sense to pay someone local (South Yorkshire) to do it for me. Ideally completed within a few days as I need it to complete a job I am doing in my garage.

Anyone done this job, and anyone else know where I could take it? Northern power tools in Sheffield no longer seem to be in business??

Your local friendly garage should be able to do that in 2 mins for you, a wiper arm pullers would have it off in no time. Heat up the new bearing with a hot air gun or even a hair dryer and it should slide on by hand

2RS bearings and it will be fine
To remove the old one there are few options the better is using a puller with low profile jaw (quite cheap on eBay)
The other is cut the bearings races and a pair of pilers .
Or use a nut buster (also this cheap on eBay)
Just touch it using a Dremel and then break it open using the nut splitter/buster

Cut a U-shaped slot in a piece of angle iron, just wide enough for the shaft. Slot it under the bearing. Rest the ends over the vice jaws. Use a brass drift to drive the shaft off the bearing. Hang a shopping bag below it to catch the rotor before it hits the floor.

As others have said, warmth on the new bearing and coldth on the shaft will ease installation. You can drive the bearing on using a socket that only touches the inner bearing race (do not hit or put pressure on the outer race).

Thanks Agroshield for this detailed guidence. I'm confused about the bit I have highlighted in bold-"ends" resting over vice jaws. Any chance of a rough sketch. I'm keen to have a go at this.

Rest the ends of the angle iron on the vice jaws so the armature hangs between them - or over anything that will allow the armature to hang between the supports.

Don't forget the bag/box/assistant to catch it when it comes free.

If you have a big enough vice, assuming you don't have a proper press of some description, I'd be more inclined to press the bearing on, still using the centre race to press against - more controlled and gentler on the shaft.

Ref the bearing you'd be better of calling City Seals and Bearing next to Northern Tools at Sheffield.

I`ve got the outer part of the bearing off, and have bought a mini puller from ebay this afternoon. I have two concerns though.

One is that there is only about 1.5mm gap to get the puller in below the old bearing, see photo . I am in doubt that the puller will fit underneath it Unless the puller grips the old bearing from either side (where the balls normally seat)? There is also what looks like two hard plastic washers/discs between the bearing and the armature? I don`t know what function these discs have. Maybe some sort of protection of the area that the brushes make contact on?


Concern No2 is having the ability to press the new one on using the vice jaws. That is where you come in and show me the ropes while I admire your monster Kawi

Comuntator looks in good nick, so just get the bearing off. 'On occasions..' I have just ground the race down to the shaft with an angle grinder, the pulled it off. Bit of care, and you no more than scuff the shaft .

I would dremel or similar that race off if you can get it close enough to the shaft you should split it easily with a small chisel, then just press the new one on.

Unfortunately for you, I killed the zzr by throwing a conrod through crankcase at .......Mmm.....Lets just say I was making very good progresss....

I used to love seeing the couple of dark green z900 bikes flying past on a regular basis while we walked to/from school in the late 70s. Great looking bikes.

You can slim down the jaws of the puller if they are too thick to go under the bearing.

On things where the grip of the puller is marginal, a G-clamp on the puller legs stopping them spreading is a good addition.

As said above, cut a slit half way through with a dremel/angle grinder and tap the slit with a chisel, it will crack and fall straight off.
Then stick the whole lot in the freezer and wait for your bearing to arrive.
When the bearing arrives heat it with a hot air gun/hairdryer/oven and it will fall onto the shaft.

As above, wouldn't mess about with a puller on that slippy inner race, grind it off. A small scuff on the shaft won't hurt.

Warming the new bearing .
What if I put the smallest gas ring on for about 5 minutes to warm the centre plate of the gas ring, then turned it off.

Then placed the new bearing on the warmed up gas plate, say for 2 mins each side, would that be okay? This is assuming there are no rubber/plastic seals on the new bearing.

I have never heated a bearing to fit on jobs like that, just gently pushed it on, either with a press or just a big G_clamp/vice.

Personally I'd prefer to use a puller, metal dust and grinding dust could kill the armature possibly.

That puller you showed above should do it with no problems.
